The circles of Hell rightfully get all the attention. But what about the circles of Heaven?
.
This early 17th-century Italian chart presents what appears to be a cross-section of the universe, with the underworld—Hell and Purgatory—at its center and succeeding circles representing new zones: the known world, Air, Fire, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, and so on. (Separating the underworld from the rest of the chart is a circle of enshrouded bodies.)

-
Written by Czech educator John Amos Comenius and published in 1658, this is the earliest known picture book for children. The book was translated into many languages and became the most popular elementary textbook in Europe, defining children's textbook for centuries.
-
The book is divided into chapters illustrated by copperplate prints (some examples above), which are described in the accompanying text. In most editions, the text is given in both Latin and the child's native language.
