Conservation is mostly concerned with populations of animals, not individuals. I know that, and I can tell myself that all day long, but it didn't make the night I found this civet any easier. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We were in a village surveying for herps and the villagers told us they had a mongoose in a bag, but getting a mongoose out of a jute sack was going to be risking some skin. Wasn't looking forward to it, but when I got to the bag there was no snarling mongoose, just this adorable baby civet. Turns out it was abandoned, most likely because the mother was killed somehow and it immediately imprinted on us. Attempts to release it were met with a scuttling, crying, incredibly lovable ball of fluff running after us and climbing up my leg. I was smitten. What could I do though? There weren't any rehab centers around, I'm getting really tired of being accused of poaching things, and there was no way it was going to survive on its own. I tried to feed it to no avail, but it did take some water. I walked around for a while with it perched on my shoulder like a parrot, trying to find it's mother but all I found were 2 jungle cats waiting for me to release their next meal. This little girl fell asleep in my arms. She trusted me. She deserved better than to be ripped limb from limb by a pair of jungle cats. But I was left with no other option. I couldn't risk bringing it to the city and have another ignorant asshole try to get the arrested. So I had to leave her. I climbed a tree and put her in a nest of leaves to wait out the night, shed a tear, and hoped for the best. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This species isn't threatened, predators need to eat too, and this juvenile individual is going to be part of the cycle of life either that night, the next day, or 4 years from now. I shouldn't cry over it, but I'm human. I know what's right and I did exactly that, but that was one of the harder things I've had to do. When something or someone completely puts their trust in you, it's tough for logic to override what makes me human. But I've found that's just part of being a conservationist. This job requires thick skin.

As consumers, we have the power to decide on what succeeds and what fails.
