This is very exciting! @waitroseandpartners are trialling a bulk/packing free offering. It includes dry goods such as rice and pasta in gravity bins, pick and mix frozen foods, wine and beer on tap and a station where they prep your veggies, so you can bring your own containers. They are also offering a borrow a box scheme for customers who don’t bring their own containers. The trial is taking place in Oxford and I presume if it goes well they will role it out to other stores. This would be a huge step forward in making zero waste shopping more mainstream. World Environment Day was yesterday. The more I see of it through travel, the more I realize how incredibly beautiful and at the same time how delicately balanced and fragile it is. Last month I experienced the magic of Iran and how emotionally and spiritually moving a place can be when it is unspoilt by human excesses. For anyone who has experienced this, it hurts to know this planet is being destroyed by the few who benefit from its plunder and governments who won’t stop this due to either their shortsightedness or just plain corruption. It hurts to see ordinary people who can take small steps like not using plastics, reducing consumption of meat, reusing and recycling things, not taking them. It hurts to see politicians backtracking and reducing even the small commitments they have made towards reversing the environmental destruction caused by us over the past century. Saving the planet sounds like a huge task, and it is, but it starts with simple things that can be done daily to instill a mindset that aligns with preservation of our plant. (Systemic racism, classism, mysogyny, violence, and so on.) . Franco has always been simple, and I am simple, but never without a stash of crafting supplies, crystals, pottery, and wall hangings. Stripping away feels hard at first, but once it is gone you realize the weight that is lifted and how unnecessary “things” really are. The mobility is freeing when you know what you need fits in a single bin and backpack and you can head off to a new adventure at any given time. We already feel as though we could live off of half of what we currently have in the van! Is it hard? There are moments, but you get creative and luckily I have always been a fan at peeing outside. We wake up next to the water, fall asleep closer to the stars, and it feels really good to be doing it together.
