Here's the second of my recent 'Old Hollywood' #caricature commissions. This one is Edward G. Robinson in Little Caesar. Quite pleased with how the bullet holes turned out.

Kicking off my Noirvember Month of film noir with my favorite, Double Indemnity (1944). Starring one of my all-time favorite actors Barbara Stanwyck and the charming Fred MacMurray. Also starring my favorite actor of all, Edward G Robinson. This classic film noir is based on the novel by James M Cain and the screenplay was co-written by director Billy Wilder and the great Raymond Chandler! A must-see! #filmnoir #doubleindemnity #septembernoir #noirvember #moviemarathon #billywilder #art #barbarastanwyck #edwardgrobinson #fredmacmurray #jamesmcain #film #noir #raymondchandler #favorite #1940s #vintage
The Stranger (1946)
Directed by Orson Welles
Recommended the reputably bleak horror film ‘The Strangers’ (2008) by a good friend, and noticing Orson Welles’ ‘The Stranger’ (1946) was also available for Netflix streaming, my night took a different turn. While I will return to the former flick another time, ‘The Stranger’ turned out to be a psychological fright in its own right, albeit in the mid-40s film noir vein. In spite of its dark thematic elements, being the first Hollywood film to contain footage of the Holocaust, it was the sole Welles film to perform well at the box office, leading the director to disregard the title from his canon and shy away from studio controlled projects in the future. Yet the long, uncut probing dialogues, as well as cutting-edge shots utilizing shadows and mirrors, maintain the feel of Welles’ vision throughout.

The film’s plot, with much of the script stealth written by John Huston, is rather simple on its face, setting up what is essentially a small town murder mystery. Former Nazi Franz Kindler, played by Welles, has fled to Connecticut under an assumed alias, shed all evidence of his former life as a mastermind of the concentration camps, and recently married the daughter of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Edward G. Robinson portrays an investigator for the United Nations War Crimes Commission who allows an imprisoned Nazi to escape, figuring the fugitive would mark the trail to Kindler’s whereabouts. Paranoia abounds, reminiscent of the nightmarish fever dream of another Nazi-related film released one year after the war, ‘Notorious.’ Not only is Kindler tormented as his sordid past catches up to him, but fear of a different kind pervades his unknowing wife who, in a terrific performance by Loretta Young in a precursor to Shelley Duvall’s terrified vulnerability in ‘The Shining’ (1980), remains in denial of her husband’s brutal nature. Robinson’s character could have been more examined (Welles pushed for Agnes Moorehead to play the character because “it would be much more interesting to have a spinster lady on the heels of this Nazi”), but the gangster film veteran is nevertheless memorable as the glue to the proceedings.
