Dear El Barrio,
:
I won’t pretend like I always loved you. Growing up, I’ve seen a-lot of things a child shouldn’t see. I saw fights, and even got into a few myself (okay a lot). I would often compare you to the “nice” neighborhoods I saw downtown, and felt embarrassed by your appearance. My teachers & parents would always tell me that I needed to finish school; so that I could leave you and be “somebody”. That was my goal. Until, I went to college and learned how marginalized communities are purposely underfunded by city officials. As a result, I began to appreciate you. I learned that you’re just like me. Always fighting & struggling to be heard….to be seen. How could I’ve ever been ashamed by you, when you taught me so much. :
:
You taught me that being street-smart is just as important as being book-smart. You taught me that code-switching is a super power. You taught me how to tell time by the street light. You taught me that when you hear your neighbor playing salsa music on a Sunday morning, you don’t call the police. You get your ass up & start cleaning. You taught me how to eat good with $3 at the bodega (Can I get a baconeggandcheese, with a soda on the side). And when I couldn’t afford to pay at the bodega, you taught me the mercy of credit. You taught me immigrants are the true superheros, and that hanging banderas outside of windows is an act of pride & resistance. You taught me how to make a lot with little. Most importantly, you taught me the power of community. :
:
I didn’t have to leave you to be somebody because, you taught me I already was somebody. But, by the time I realized, I was too late. Gentrification had already seduced you, & manipulated you to think that you needed to change. I can see you’re colorfulness fading fast. You’re becoming dull, & cold. We’re still fighting to keep some pieces of you but, gentrification isn’t letting you go so easily. As a consequence, many familiar faces left by forced displacement. Like Hector Lavoe said, “Todo tiene su final, nada dura para siempre.” I can’t no longer afford you but, what you taught me was priceless. I promise to still visit and reminisce with you about the good ol days.

❤️ Bibi
