Loving this shirt I snagged at the second-hand store but also this photo of me because I’m half-laughing but also half-daring you to fight me on this. Don’t mind me — I’ll just be wearing this for the next 554 days. (Yes there are 554 days until November 3, 2020. ) #resist #election2020 #metoo #yesallwomen #kamalaharris2020 #elizabethwarren2020 #awomansplaceisintheresistance
In this mural and subsequent painting on canvas I’m drawing a parallel to the wealth gap in America NOW to the French Revolution, represented here by Marie Antoinette in the 1700s. HOPEFULLY, with our democratic system we won’t need to beheading anyone. I think the best plan I’ve heard to start fixing the problem of drastic wealth inequality is from #ElizabethWarren. She wants to do something called “The Ultra-Millionaire Tax.” In her words, “I’m proposing something brand new – a tax on the wealth of the richest Americans. My Ultra-Millionaire Tax asks the richest 0.1% of Americans to pay their fair share, raising nearly $3 trillion that we can use to rebuild the middle class.”
After hearing @elizabethwarren’s news this week, I have to share again this positivity portrait from last year. There are so many qualities I admire in her, all contributing to her steadfast integrity. Whether she (runs and) wins, or another, I sure hope to see a leader step in who is driven by kindness, above all else. ❤️
Well, we made it through my return to work. It was a long three days and nights (I work 12 hour night shifts). Returning to work after maternity leave for anyone and any baby is tough. Babies need their parents and so much attention in these early months. I wish I could have stayed home longer—moreover and I wish our country wasn’t in the dark ages when it comes to state sponsored parental leave. I am blessed to have a job that affords me enough sick, vaca, and holiday time that I got to spend the last 10 weeks with my sweet nugget. But she’s still just so tiny and I feel at a complete loss being away from her.
Then the perspective slams into place—this could be even worse. ‘Away’ is three miles, not 300+. She’s home in bed with her daddy watching over her. She’s not in the ICU fighting for her life. She’s not in danger of coding. All of her organs function as they should.
Basically, it’s extremely unlikely that she’ll die while I am at work.
I had to leave Avie at 6 months in order to keep her insurance and our home. Even at 6 months, she was so incredibly sick. She was still in the ICU on dialysis, fresh off a 4+ month long intubation. She was in constant narcotic withdrawal from weaning meds she’d been on her whole life. She had multiple indwelling lines that all posed a risk for infection. And she was 5 hours from our home and my job at a speciality hospital.
Every time I stepped out of her hospital room I had to convince myself she wouldn’t die while I was away. Every weekend I worked, I worried something would happen and I wouldn’t be there. Twice we nearly did lose her.
Even so, I lost so much valuable time with my daughter. She was alive 18 months and I spent 6 months of that time working—just to keep her and us insured and our basic needs met.
But why did it have to be that way? Why doesn’t our country offer parental leave so parents aren’t placed in such a horrid predicament?
It’s so awful, I can’t even discuss it properly. As of now, our government isn’t providing me much hope either.
Then I look into the eyes of my new little babe and I just know she’s going to do big things. Step aside boys—#thefutureisfemale
