Can I level with you all for a second? If you do one thing, just one, to improve your horsemanship- get a helmet. Now. Do it now. Not in a week. Not after your next ride. Now. You won’t regret it. . . .
Training colts is mostly a crap shoot. Some days they are wonderful and then some days they seem to forget that they have any semblance of training. Yesterday was actually a little of both. It started normally enough. He stood quietly while I groomed and tacked him up and even when I climbed on he stood motionless. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I usually ride with my phone tucked into a sports band on my arm, but I had forgot it at home. So I wrestled a little bit: do I put it in my sports bra, or shove it in the gullet of my saddle? Thankfully I tucked it in my sports bra. Next I decided to shuck my winter coat. I’ve taken my coat off a million times on him and he has only come undone once. This time was different. One of the Velcro tabs got stuck to my saddle pad as I was reaching around to take it off. I tried to free it before Stitch realized what had happened. This horse is so fast and so athletic I didn’t stand a chance. He went full rodeo in two strides. Miraculously I sat one of the bucks but was soon thrown forward over his shoulder. I landed head first, naturally. Thankfully my phone was with me and not shoved in my saddle as it was bucking across the arena. . .
The hospital said my CT scans came back clear and that I have a cervical sprain. The doctor also said I was so lucky because I was wearing a helmet. I don’t want to sound preach-y, but get a helmet. It is not a matter of if you’ll need it, but when. Stitch has been nothing but a rockstar since I’ve owned him. He is 99% of the time a steady, solid little horse. It was just a freak thing that happened.

Eine Veränderung kann manchmal ziemlich hart sein. Aber viel härter ist es, sein ganzes Leben lang zu bereuen, es niemals versucht zu haben. .

Anyone else feel guilty going out while you are in PA/MED/NP/Pharmacy school? I know I did. I felt as if I should be doing something relating to school just because I was just in the habit of studying. You live, breathe, and die medicine.
