Today is Endangered Species Day, and the UN’s recent landmark report warns that 1 million species now face extinction. Orangutans are no exception. ⠀

Did you know that pangolins are natural bug busters, consuming roughly 70 million ants and termites a year? Unfortunately, pangolins are coveted for their meat and scales in parts of Asia, making them the most trafficked animal in the world and a critically endangered species. This shy little guy was spotted in the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in South Africa, a National Geographic Unique Lodge. Photo by @rodgerbowren. #endangeredspeciesday #natgeolodges
Celebrating #worldotterday
A female sea otter carries, grooms and nurses her pup on her belly as she floats on her back for six to eight months. Females are fiercely protective of their pups and if she has to dive to get food she will make sure her pup is safe from drifting away by wrapping it in some kelp. If in danger she will grab her young by the scruff of their neck with her teeth and dive away to safety. Tag someone who should see this

#Lions need your help on #EndangeredSpeciesDay. The number of wild lions across Africa has plummeted from 200,000 to 20,000 in the past 50 years due to habitat loss, poaching, prey loss and climate change. You can help save lions by supporting better management of protected areas and always refusing any products made from lion parts. Join us today. #PoachingStealsFromUsAll #LetLionsLive Wildaid.org/protectlions (also linked in bio)⠀
Today is Endangered Species Day so I thought it would be a good day to shine a light on one of our most fundamental environmental laws: the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The ESA was passed in 1973 and its purpose is to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems that they depend on. And… IT WORKS. The ESA has been over 99% successful at preventing extinction. The act has also designated millions of acres of critical habitat for recovering species. Here is a list of just a few [out of hundreds of] species that might not be around today if it weren’t for the ESA: alligators, manatees, bald eagles, grizzly bears, gray wolves, whooping cranes, California condors, humpback whales…the list goes on. Florida alone has around 130 species currently under protection by ESA.
·
The Trump Administration, is making attempts to weaken the ESA, proposing policy changes that would undermine protections for wildlife. At the same time, hundreds of scientists from over 50 countries published a report this month for the United Nations stating that millions of plant and animal species are on the verge of extinction. The good news is that the report also states that it’s not too late to make a difference if we start now. There are solutions and we CAN have a sustainable future for wildlife and people. ·
Today is a good day to take the opportunity to learn about imperiled species in your area and find out what you can do to help. You, as an individual, have an impact. Don’t assume someone else is doing something about it. Vote, call your reps, raise your voice. Step up, show up. We need you.

"The pangolin’s body armor protects it from all known predators — except humans," says Catherine Workman, Senior Director of Wildlife at National Geographic Society. "Today, pangolins are the most heavily trafficked wild mammal in the world." Photo by @daisygilardini // Following up after endangered species day yesterday, I want to pay tribute to "Lonesome George.” I was lucky enough to photograph George during a trip to the Galapagos Islands in 2005. At that time, scientists were trying hard to find a mate for him and save the species.Sadly, he passed away on June 24th, 2012. The Pinta giant tortoise, has gone extinct. He was the last of his kind.As the recent UN report on biodiversity warns us, one million specIes now face extinction. It is our duty to take action NOW.
