Need some summer reading?⠀
⠀
I've been following the work of Dr. Leo Trasande (@leotrasande) for probably close to 9 years now, and immediately bought this book the moment it was released!⠀
⠀
Trasande has published over 150 papers, almost exclusively focused on environmental toxins, endocrine disruption, obesity, and children's health, and his work has been cited over 17,000 times. ⠀
⠀
That post from last week about endocrine-disrupting chemicals costing the US $340 billion annually? That was Trasande's work. ⠀
⠀
While this book is an important read for anyone, I consider it required reading for health professionals across ALL modalities. ⠀
⠀
You'll find it, along with some of my other favorite books at the link in my bio! ⠀
⠀
What are some of YOUR favorite books on environmental toxins⠀

⠀
"Which plastics are safe?"⠀
⠀
I get this question a lot. ⠀
⠀
By "safe" we mean plastics that don't expose us to harmful or potentially harmful chemicals, like endocrine disruptors. ⠀
⠀
The "bad for you" phrasing in the quote in my graphic is in reference to the plastics that we know leach chemicals that can cause harm. ⠀
⠀
Here are some truths: ⠀
⠀
⚡Not all plastics are the same. ⠀
⚡Not all plastics contain BPA. ⠀
⚡Some plastics are worse than others. ⠀
⚡We shouldn't be plastic-phobic.⠀
⚡We should reduce food contact with plastic. ⠀
⚡This includes buying foods packaged in plastics. ⠀
⠀
This little rhyme can help you remember which are the baddest of the bad, and which ones you can cut yourself some slack around. ⠀
⠀
Plastics marked 5, 4, and 2 don't seem to leach harmful compounds- ie, they're more stable. The rest should be avoided when possible. ⠀
⠀
PS: The fact that these numbers are found inside the chasing arrows symbol ♻️ does NOT mean that they are actually recyclable. It literally has nothing to do with recycling. ⠀
⠀
** Plastics, and the issues with them is a topic I explore in-depth, along with many others inside my Talking Toxins course. ⠀
⠀
This 5-week course was created to help health professionals prevent overlooked exposures from undermining their client's outcomes. ⠀
⠀
With over 10 hours of teaching, hundreds of citations, 10 white-labeled resources to use in your practice, and access that doesn't expire, Talking Toxins is the best place to get started! ⠀
⠀
This is the course I WISHED was available when I started learning about environmental toxins and is now my flagship program. ⠀
⠀
Head to the link in my bio (@environmentaltoxinsnerd) to learn more about this course, and to get signed up! ⠀
⠀
Know any health professionals who want a better handle on how all these toxins are affecting us, what we can do about them, and how we can talk about them in a more empowering manner?⠀

Are cash register receipts that big a deal?⠀
⠀
YES. In my last post about plastics, I mentioned that BPA is found in some plastics but not all. ⠀
⠀
For the BPA (or it's replacements) to migrate out of plastic in any significant amount, there needs to be interference in the form of heat, oil, acidity, abrasion, and/or time. ⠀
⠀
When it comes to cash register receipts or any thermal paper, this isn't the case. ⠀
⠀
That slightly powdery feel of thermal paper? That's free BPA (or BPS), which acts like "ink". ⠀
⠀
Dermal absorption of bisphenol chemicals is significant, and the use of hand sanitizer products (which often greet you at the entrance of food stores), can dramatically increase that absorption. ⠀
⠀
A 2014 study published in PLOS ONE (PMID: 25337790) found that dermal absorption of BPA is significant, and can be increased after someone applies hand sanitizer. ⠀
⠀
Dermal absorption is a big deal: things we absorb through the skin or sublingually bypass first pass metabolism in the liver, and instead circulate through the body before eventually getting to the liver to be metabolized. ⠀
⠀
When chemicals are tested for toxicity, the default method used by regulatory agencies is intra-gastric gavage, ie ingestion. ⠀
⠀
According to that 2014 study, for BPA "this approach results in less than 1% of the administered dose being bioavailable in blood." ⠀
⠀
However, other studies have found significantly higher absorption & bioavailability - around 70-90% from sublingual exposure (PMID: 23761051). ⠀
⠀
PRACTITIONERS: Are you asking your clients or patients about whether they handle receipts on the job?⠀
⠀
While this exposure might seem insignificant, these studies suggest they are not! ⠀

⠀
90-95% of cancers are attributed to environmental & lifestyle factors. ⠀
⠀
These factors include, but are not limited to cigarette smoking, poor diet, alcohol, sun exposure, environmental pollutants, infections, stress, obesity, and physical inactivity.⠀
⠀
I'm all for spending money on how to combat cancer once it develops, but hey, novel idea here: LET'S FOCUS ON PREVENTION BY ADDRESSING ALL THOSE ENVIRONMENTAL & LIFESTYLE FACTORS FIRST. ⠀
⠀
Prevention isn't as sexy, or as marketable as "the race for the cure" and all that pink-ribbon garbage, but it's IMPORTANT. ⠀

This is a tough one to write because I know that balloons create a lot of joy for kids. But balloons kill more seabirds than any other plastic and that’s a tough stat to ignore. -
Here are some other things you can use to make your party festive:
- Leaf confetti: Create homemade confetti by punching holes in leaves! Totally natural and biodegradable. - -
-Ribbon dancers. They are beautiful and engaging and can be re-used many times. You can find ones that have wood handles and natural material ribbons as well or you can make your own.
- Wildflower seed bombs: You can find native species seed bombs in beautiful colours and they make fun and eco friendly party favours.
- Bubbles! Bubbles are so fun, even for adults. And there is no need to keep buying little containers of bubble solution. Just buy the wand and make your own bubbles! There is a great recipe on greenandcleanmom.org that just involves dish detergent, water and honey.

New York will be the first state in the nation to require ingredient disclosure in period products! ⠀
⠀
@womensvoices has been investigating the presence of questionable chemicals in feminine care products for a number of years now. ⠀
⠀
They've found pesticide residues, dioxins and furans, even added fragrances (at least the others were contaminants and not intentionally added!!) ⠀
⠀
Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, sponsor of the bill that's currently awaiting signing from Governor Cuomo stated: ⠀
⠀
“Menstruators have a right to know the ingredients in products that they put in and on some of the most sensitive parts of their bodies 24 hours a day, for seven to 10 days a month every month for as many as 40 years. ⠀
⠀
For years, menstruators have been stigmatized, their periods shrouded by shame. This legislation helps to smash the stigma surrounding menstruation and helps empower menstruators to make educated decisions about the products they use on their most sensitive parts of their bodies.” ⠀
⠀
There ARE better options! ⠀

If you're wanting to upgrade your own period products, or have some resources to share with your clients, head to the link in my bio (@environmentaltoxinsnerd) to check out some of my faves! ⠀

⠀
Crazy how people are scratching their heads about this... ⠀
⠀
If we look at the scientific literature about the effects of exposures to hundreds of man-made & even natural chemicals, the stats on increasing rates of cancer, infertility, asthma, allergies, etc. begin to make more sense. ⠀
⠀⠀
Environmental toxins are at the top of this list.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
I hope you are working your magic on the clients and patients you see
Comment YES if you are!
Comment Not yet, if you're wanting to, but not there yet!⠀

Growth requires us to forgive ourselves for what we didn't know before.⠀
I mean, people were smoking on airplanes not that long ago!
Some of the things we were raised believing have been disproven as science evolved. We still have a long way to go so we really can't afford to go backward.⠀
Did you cook with Teflon pots and pans to feed yourself and your family?
Was plastic tupperware frequently used to store your food?
How about those heavily fragranced candles, room sprays, and personal care products?⠀
TRUTH: You cannot beat yourself up over things you can't go back in time to change.
Use what you know NOW to make informed decisions, and help your clients make informed choices!
Be proud that you are on the path of unlearning bad consumer behaviors!
What are some big things YOU'VE had to "unlearn" Let me know in the comments
