⚡️ Día Mundial de los Océanos •
•
•

The great view and someone's beach cleanup. To the hero who just did that: thank you. The bag was gone the next day. It gives me hope that we have a chance to save this small planet...

The feminist #socialmovement marching against water privatization in El Salvador today. Environmental justice, including care of ecosystems and water resources, are central elements of the Salvadoran feminist platform #NadaSobreNosotrasSinNosotras. The Colectiva Feminista issued a statement today outlining why: --Risk situations become more acute if women do not have access to drinking water in their homes or communities, since they are responsible for caring for people and for life, for which access and use of water is essential. --Privatization will set back the empowerment of women to participate in community water management. --Women will face greater poverty because the costs would increase. --Corporate facilities established in water-rich territories will exploit water and limit its access to communities, mainly affecting "caregiving" work and the women who disproportionately do this work. --The deliberate decrease in water flow caused by [corporate] exploitation would cause greater scarcity and destruction of ecosystems. --Privatization would increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies and health problems; women would be disproportionately exposed to these risks and to a greater workload in caring for people with health problems. --The boom in extractive activities would diminish the health and safety of women and children due to the increased risks of encountering violence, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse.

For the kids who strike: collective action is the only way to change the status quo, respect! Excerpts from #GeorgeMonbiot article in the Guardian: "Every day at home, we tell you that if you make a mess you should clear it up. We tell you that you should take responsibility for your own lives. But we have failed to apply these principles to ourselves. We walk away from the mess we have made, in the hope that you might clear it up.
-
Some of us did try. We sought to inspire our own generations to do what you are doing. But on the whole we were met with frowns and shrugs. For years, many people of my age denied there was a problem. They denied that climate breakdown was happening. They denied that extinction was happening. They denied that the world’s living systems were collapsing.
-
They denied all this because accepting it meant questioning everything they believed to be good. If the science was right, their car could not be right. If the science was right, their foreign holiday could not be right. Economic growth, rising consumption, the entire system they had been brought up to believe was right, had to be wrong. It was easier to pretend that the science was wrong and their lives were right than to accept that the science was right and their lives were wrong.
-
A few years ago, something shifted. Instead of denying the science, I heard the same people say, “OK, it’s real. But now it’s too late to do anything about it.” Between their denial and their despair, there was not one moment at which they said, “It is real, so we must act.” Their despair was another form of denial; another way of persuading themselves that they could carry on as before. If there was no point in acting, they had no need to challenge their deepest beliefs. Because of the denial, the selfishness, the short-termism of my generation, this is now the last chance we have".

Every issue of the magazine is great but I'm biased towards this one Love the native representation & everything else.
The inside interviews focus on the interplay of the arts & activism.

#Blacklungsmatter!!!!!!! The mum of the 9-year-old girl who died in 2013 from air pollution in London wins a right to seek new inquest!
Ella 9 at the time, died from respiratory failure and severe asthma.
As I’d like to say Ella died from environmental discrimination/ environmental racism.
The reason why I believe that I think that?
Race is the most significant predictor of a person living near contaminated water, soil or air... As it is no coincidence Ella was living in Lewisham, a region in south London known to be the pollution hotspot of the city.
When I looked closely to what constituted the demographics of Lewisham in 2013 I was not surprised to see that In the years 2008/09 there were more than 35000 pupils enrolled in Lewisham’s 91 schools and 61% of which were from black and minority ethnic communities.
The borough of Lewisham is one of the most diverse local authority in England and where two out of every five residents are from a black and minority ethnic background.
Coincidence? I don’t think so... But In the meantime, I’d like to give all my support to Rosamund ( Ella's mother) in fighting this case.✊
Today I began my new position as the California Regional Strategist for @earthjustice , which is a public interest law firm that currently has 100+ lawsuits against the Trump administration. I’ll be focusing on spatial equity and environmental justice for POC / immigrant / tribal communities, overseeing advocacy and awareness building for our California issues and telling stories about alternative possibilities for our future. I want to partner with other organizations & initiatives who centralize nature, racial and environmental justice as well as connect with journalists and media interested in writing about these issues. Looking forward to giving more talks about environmentalism, alternative geographies and sustainable futures. Please connect me to folks and your network who would be interested in collaborating. Here’s to protecting our health, spirit, nature, communities and environment in 2019. Shoutout to @urbannativeera for this “You are on Native Land” hoodie [feel free to share or repost]
