Day 2: We decided to turn around from our spot near Middle Velma and head back towards Bayview. There’s a small, snow-covered trail branching off of the main trail that leads up to Maggie’s Peak. It was another strenuous uphill climb with our packs, but we made it up in good time.
+
The view from Maggie’s Peak was amazing — you could see both Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, as well as a few smaller lakes below. We found a flat spot away from the cliff and trail to set up for the night. We snuggled up to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever witnessed. And then, believe it or not... we saw an entire fireworks show from across the lake in Nevada!
+
The next morning, we awoke to a breathtaking sunrise. There was something magical about the way the golden rays of sun filtered through the branches of the trees and warmed up the distant snowy peaks with a soft, pink glow.

There is something so, so rewarding about backpacking — to be in the backcountry, away from civilization, to be self-sustaining, and to test our limits. We are so grateful for every opportunity to be outdoors, to be immersed in nature. It’s been one incredible trip. So... where to next?

Luna is such a happy little camper. Ever since her very first trip, she’s loved being outdoors. She’s never minded the mud, the rain, or the cold. And I hope it’s because she has never felt alone in the world. Because of Noctis, and because of us — because we’re family. ♥️

Luna girl, I hope you know how much we love you. We can’t wait for a lifetime of adventures to come. ✨

We had a CRAZY adventure this weekend, and learned the hard way that AWD ≠ 4x4. We completely underestimated how rough the road to our campsite would be, even after watching a video of the entire drive — the camera didn’t truly capture just how steep the inclines are! The Subie can hang on flat dirt roads and snowy, winding mountain roads, but when it comes to steep inclines and rock crawling... well, at least not with stock tires and suspension . We practically slid down the rocky hill to the campsite, and it’s a miracle we didn’t tip over. Lesson learned. If it says 4x4, they mean 4x4.

Luckily, our friends @shiba.pack were able to tow us up some steep areas in their 4Runner! We were scared that we’d be stuck and would require a $3000 rescue mission... we didn’t even have actual tow straps, just some ratchet tie downs for securing our stuff to the roof rack! We’re so grateful for our awesome friends who LITERALLY pulled us out of a sticky situation ♥️ thank you @shiba.pack and @toshitails!
