“Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help shall all be saved.” - Jane Goodall
. . .
Happy Birthday Jane Goodall! Dame Jane Morris Goodall is a British primatologist and anthropologist, who was born #onthisday in 1934. Best known for her 55-year study of social and familial interactions of wild chimpanzees, Dr. Goodall is considered to be the world’s foremost chimpanzee expert. She has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues, as founder of both the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots programme. She has also served on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project since its founding in 1996.
. . .
Jane Goodall always had a passion for animals and Africa. She began work as a secretary in Kenya in 1957, where she met Louis Leakey, notable archaeologist and palaeontologist. Just hoping to discuss animals with Leakey, he actually invited Goodall to become a chimpanzee researcher. Goodall studied for a PhD (without an undergraduate degree) in ethology at the University of Cambridge. Her thesis detailed her first 5 years studying chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania. Without specific training to direct her work, Goodall was able to observe things that might have gone unnoticed with strict scientific doctrines. She found that, "it isn't only human beings who have personality, who are capable of rational thought [and] emotions like joy and sorrow." She observed acts such as hugs, kisses, pats on the back, and tickling, which were previously considered “human” behaviours. She also discovered much more violent and aggressive behaviour among chimpanzees. Today, Goodall devotes virtually all of her time to advocacy on behalf of chimpanzees and the environment, travelling nearly 300 days a year.

It took me longer than some but I graduated with honors with a degree in natural resource ecology and a certificate in wildlife management. From trekking through rivers and birding in the subtropics, I loved every minute of it. I will be applying to doctorate programs this year to pursue my PhD...and so the next chapter begins!

*************
#MothersDay This koala mother and her joey (her baby) live in the Phillip Island Koala Reserve in Melbourne, #Australia. Scientists are studying the park's #koalas to see if their proximity to the visitors affects their heart rate.

A tender moment between a white tailed deer mother and fawn, before the mother becomes distracted by something. The fawn tries to nurse, but the mom moves on. The little one seems to accept cheerfully. ... I feel the mother's tension, between tenderness for her young one and nervousness about what may be around them in the woods. Definitely a different vibe than watching my goat care for her little ones within the relative safety of their pen. ... I'm so grateful to be able to observe these moments - I've waited a long time for this!
