@gretathunberg recently addressed the UK parliament, saying ‘I know many of you don’t want to listen to us – you say we are just children. But we’re only repeating the message of the united climate science.’
She pointed out the UK shale gas fracking industry, the expansion of North Sea oil and gas fields, the building of more airports and planning permission of a brand new coal mine as ‘absurd’, as well as the UKs ‘creative’ carbon accounting.
We are not doing enough, we talk about climate change seriously, but this is not reflected in our actions.
The greenhouse gas emissions curve is still increasing. Greta says that every time we make a decision, we should think about how it will affect the curve. Indeed, she says we should ask ourselves ‘have we got the carbon budget to spare to go through with this?’
We know climate change is a real and dangerous problem. This is a fact. We’ve known it for years. We know that we must reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and make the economy more circular.
We haven’t quite figured out all the solutions yet, and this is where political inertia stems from. As Greta says ‘we have to start treating the crisis like a crisis – and act even if we don’t have all of the solutions’.
Stopping climate change will require a lot of thinking and change to our economies and governments. We don’t know the answer yet, but we will find a way. Anything we all put our mind to, we can achieve.
Climate change is real, and an emergency, let’s treat it like one.
At a pre-arranged signal of a violin playing, over 100 young people and adults, aged from 2 to 92 lay down under Dippy, the famous copy of a diplodocus skeleton which is currently touring the UK. The young people and adults lay still on the ground for 20 minutes as if they were dead in order to highlight the danger of extinction. Many held handwritten signs with the question “Are we next?” and some children had drawn pictures of their favourite at-risk animals.
The event was organised by the Wee Rebellion, a climate change protest group for young people in Glasgow associated with Extinction Rebellion. It followed a similar event organised by Extinction Rebellion in the Natural History Museum in London last week and is part of the International Mass Die-In and Celebration called for by Extinction Rebellion Berlin.
@aimeetollan cycled 1 mile to the library today. That’s 1 mile, through Greenwich and Lewisham.
Look at this mess left behind by the #londonmarathon @londonmarathon
She stopped to speak to a road sweeper who told her all the kerbside litter will go into landfill the only recycling was from the drink/water stations. She watched him sweeping mixed litter into bags. Coffee cups etc.
Not that you can recycle a @lucozadesport bottle anyway because of that pesky plastic wrap on it.
So all of this... 1 mile out of 26... will go into landfill.
All @buxtonwater and @lucozadesport bottles.
Isn’t that shameful.
Why does an event have to be at the detriment of our planet?
How quickly they pointed the finger at #extinctionrebellion for a mess they didn’t leave yet this is ok because it’s a yearly sporting event.
Makes me sick to my stomach. Why is Sir David and the @bbc banging on about saving the earth when another department in the same building is showing trashing the place.
Seriously wrong. Zoom in on the bus lane pic and see how far up the road they go just in this section.
Thank you lovely Aimee for your pics and for getting off your bike to find out what’s going on ♥️ #2minutebeachclean
After getting up at 6am and donning a suit and some green re Extinction Rebellion's request that we look as smart as we could I sat with others at various sites in the financial district yesterday to cause a li'l morning disruption on the current last day of protests concerning climate change and specifically various companies collusion in the planets imminent destruction and therefore the human races inevitable extinction. Sticking out like a tory at a homeless shelter, terrified by the outcome if we fail but glad to have stood up (and sat down) for what I know to be worth fighting for - yours and everyone's future on this fragile planet. Ignore the emergency and consign your children to death or simply sign up to receive information at www.rebellion.earth and see what small good you can also easily do Photo credit to @mikerbiz / #humansofxr

I would like to take a moment to imagine.. and feel hopeful. Over these last few months a lot has been achieved. We still have a long way to go - but we are making progress. This beautiful sign found on the Instagram of: #Repost @lucyataylor with @get_repost

PLEASE READ: We have 11 years left to tackle climate change. That prospect is terrifying but what does it actually mean?
-
In November 2018 the IPCC (the UN climate change body) released their latest report stating that we had 12 years (now 11) to reign in our emissions or else face a complete irreversible climate breakdown. But how? This limit of 11 years is referring to ‘tipping points’ in the earth’s climate as we will start to cross these tipping points once we hit 1.5 degrees C of global warming and this is expected to happen around 2030, 11 years away. Once we have crossed a tipping point it will become a feedback loop which means that after than point humans will be unable to go back to before that tipping point and it will be irreversible, while at the same time accelerate and rapidly increase global warming even if humanity manages to transition to a carbon neutral/negative society. An example of a tipping point is the Arctic, as as more of the white ice (which reflects heat) melts more of the black water of the ocean will be exposed (which absorbs heat). Once a certain % of the Arctic has melted the heat absorbed by the black sea water become more ‘powerful’ than the white ice and the Arctic will start to melt itself. After this point is reached we will be unable to do anything to stop this and once we start to trigger feedback loops through global warming and climate change, they in turn will trigger other feedback loops and this will rapidly lead to a complete climate and ecological breakdown as the climate rapidly warms and ecosystems and the natural world collapses. These tipping points can be ‘large’ like a global weather system or smaller such as a feedback loop causes in a region of a country. They can involve ecosystems which will collapse as humans continue to plunder and imbalance them, things like forests and much more. Please don’t take this post as scientific word as I am sure there will be many inaccuracies and it isn’t very well worded, this is just my own understanding squeezed into an Instagram post:)

And if you think I’m going to do a little “I told you so” dance, you’re wrong. You’re going to get a whole fucking broadway musical performer by yours truly.
