A mother's love
Mothers gathered last week in a show of solidarity with Hong Kong’s young protesters, pleading their lives must be treasured.
An estimated 8,000 mums attend rally in Chater Garden in Central, hoping youth will control their emotions and calling on government to listen.
They expressed fears for the safety of their children following the storming of the city’s legislature by mostly young protesters on Monday, stressing that their lives must be treasured.
They expressed hope that youngsters would control their emotions but also urged the government to stop being “arrogant” and listen to their demands.

Caught in action. Our @CBSNews team was filming inside Hong Kong’s legislature after protestors, angry at their government and by extension Beijing, stormed it on the 22nd anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese rule from Britain - the first time such a breach has *ever* happened. We were snapped by another photographer who kindly sent this shot over. I’m calling it the ‘mural of chaos’ - so many people doing different things as we recorded history unfolding before our eyes. Protestors demand the city’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, resign. Watch our reports on @cbsthismorning and @cbseveningnews. : @HongKongFP photographer Thammakhun John Crowcroft

Millions of people in Hong Kong have been taking to the streets in historic protests for weeks to protest a bill that could extradite anyone in Hong Kong suspected of crimes by Chinese authorities to China and to demand that Hong Kong’s chief executive step down. @kassy explains what you need to know. We got tear gassed in Hong Kong. It burned. This city’s police chief actually said, “We have to use force.” And they did. Watch the tensions flare in our newest @cbseveningnews piece now in my bio. The violence between protestors and police is all about a Beijing-backed - and controversial - extradition bill. In addition to local Hong Kongers, foreigners - and yes that means Americans too - could be extradited to mainland China if you were deemed to run afoul of certain laws. Our awesome cameraman @cbs_randy grabbed this still from the video even though all of our eyes were stinging. These super kind protestors helped douse the burn. Very grateful. @CBSNews is here. What Hong Kong's July 1 march looks like from above.⠀
⠀
Marchers mostly dressed in black were out in full force for the city's annual march, as violence earlier at the Legislative Council marred the 22nd anniversary of the city’s return to China, with protesters smashing the building's glass doors. ⠀

NEW: Hong Kong’s leader apologizes, but can’t say the words protestors want to hear: retract and resign. Chief executive Carrie Lam is really stuck between her Beijing superiors on mainland and Hong Kong protestors on her doorstep. An unenviable place to be. Our @CBSNews latest from the field as we continue to cover the tension from a hated extradition law. Kudos to our ace news team of @erinelyall @cbs_randy and @stanley_mousse. 19-year-old artist Steven Tang took the most memorable moments from last week's historic protests and put them on canvas.
His painting includes policemen using tears gas and protesters holding up umbrellas as their defence. It also shows a middle-aged woman who bellowed at the police, begging them to stop, and an injured protester who was lying on a stretcher whilst bleeding.

"Free Hong Kong, democracy now"
"Release the martrys"
These were the chants of Hong Kong protesters who turned out on June 26. Hundreds besieged the Hong Kong police headquarters again into the wee hours, the second time in a week, over the now-suspended extradition bill.
Thousands were part of a peaceful rally at Edinburgh Place in the Central business district. Earlier in the day, an estimated 10,000 gathered peacefully in the heart of the financial district.
