After my son died, I stayed off of social media for a few weeks. I didn’t want to see pictures of him on posts with the letters RIP that inevitably followed. It just hurt me way too much. I remember the first time I opened my Facebook app and saw the notification that I had a memory to look back on from the same time last year... there it was... a picture of my son looking so happy and beautifully alive... and I was in no way expecting or prepared to see it. I don’t think Facebook knows the role they are playing in the lives of people who are grieving. The alert of a memory can be a powerfully painful trigger in the middle of a day that someone might otherwise get through without crying.
