Lets have a little controversial chat about money... specifically “wow that’s a lot of money for paper”. I’m actually quite lucky that this isn’t something people say to me often- but I do hear of this happening on a daily basis. Potential clients being outraged that the beautiful paper costs more than something you buy in paperchase. So why the price difference? First and foremost- if you’re having something made specifically for you. This takes skill and time- and like all jobs, this needs to be taken into account. Just because we’re self employed, doesn’t mean we work for free. In fact, if we do, we never get paid! The average amount of time I spend on producing a house suite is around 10 hours- this includes admin, emailing, calligraphy, design, printing, packing, shipping... there’s probably more. For a bespoke suite, this is quite a lot more design time. Secondly - print costs. When you’re mass producing print- for eg paperchase- the costs come down to nothinh. Once you print 10,000 of something, each sheet ends up costing less than a penny. When you’re only printing 50 of something, the set up and material costs seem much higher as they’re not being absorbed into a huge print run. Printing in small quantities is always going to be far more expensive. Economies of scale sadly don’t come into play. Next up- materials. Especially when we’re looking at hot foil, the foil, board, plates to press- all of these are very expensive. Lastly- overheads. Things that you don’t think about, but we have to. This includes all the costs of running a business - tax, hardware, software, rent, insurance... snore. But it has to come from somewhere. So that pretty bit of paper; quick math: paper + materials + time + skills + overheads = why it’s not just paper. I also think that there is still the huge misconception that people hear ‘wedding’ and charge more which is absolutely not true. I charge the same irrelevant of the occasion- the same goes for all makers I know: cake makers, florists, jewellers- it doesn’t matter what it’s for, the little math equation comes into play. It’s the same amount of work whatever the occasion.
