Waking up to the sad news that a good friend, a remarkable individual and a talented driver is no longer with us. The laughs and experiences we shared during our careers at Brabham will remain with me and I hope you #restinpeace knowing that your legacy will live on. #nikilauda #gordonmurray #rip #ripniki #brabham #mclaren #worldchampion #formula1 #f1 #bt46b #fancar #austria #f1driver #legacy #niki #champion #neverforget #1949 - #2019 #motorsport #lauda
The Brabham BT46B also known as the fancar made its grand prix debut #OnThisDay during the 1978 Swedish grand prix. The 1978 season was dominated by the Lotus 79 of Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson. Brabham was competitive but they didn't win a race in the first 7 rounds of the season. Brabham at that point had already worked on the Fan car since 1977 and it saw daylight for the first time at the Swedish grand prix. The design was radical, the car had a huge fan at the back of the car. The regulations are clear, you can't use a moveable aero device, but a fan that cooled the engine was legal. Therefore the fan car was allowed to participate in the 1978 Swedish grand prix. The big fan at the back of the car sucked the car to the ground which meant that the lateral grip would be enormous. The suspension also lowered when the drivers hit the gas pedal which meant that it would throw up dirt and rocks constantly. The big fan was covered by a dust bin lit until it raced. Bernie Ecclestone didn't want to show the competition how fast they where so they loaded up the cars with fuel and tried to avoid pole position as much as they could. Andretti qualified on pole with the fan cars of Watson and Lauda in 2nd and 3rd. Andretti led the field while Lauda overtook Watson who got a bad start dropping a few spots to Patrese and Peterson. Peterson soon dropped back to 17th after he got a puncture. Watson suddenly spun off on lap 20 with a throttle problem retiring from the race. Lauda put Andretti under massive pressure, Mario made a mistake which saw Lauda sneak through. Andretti tried to come back at Lauda but an engine failure ruined his day. The impressive Australian Alan Jones put on a wonderful show until he retired with a wheel problem. Lauda won the race by 34 seconds in front of Patrese who held off the remarkable comeback of Peterson to 3rd. The car was deemed legal after the race and could drive the whole season if they wanted to, but they voluntarily retired the car to avoid conflict with other team owners.
