If you feel like you’re ‘behind’ in your goals, this is for you... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whether you’re comparing your progress to someone else’s, or constantly playing catch up with your own unrealistic deadlines... I feel you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I spent the last THREE years working toward a goal. I did a lot of research (like a TON) and a lot of thinking. I even did a lot of talking. But there wasn’t a whole lot of ‘doing’! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Partly because I’m a perfectionist and partly (gosh, this is so hard to say) because I was scared of failing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Eventually, I stopped talking about it because it got embarrassing. I stopped giving updates on Instagram because I felt like I was letting you guys down by not following through on my dream. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But a couple of months ago, all the scattered pieces of the puzzle started to come together ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mainly because I asked for help. ‘On my own’ hadn’t gotten me very far in three years! So I decided to invest in myself and sign up to a course. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2 months later and I’m ready to host my first LIVE writing webinar! (See yesterday’s post) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So if YOU have a dream (maybe it’s a novel, maybe it’s something else) and you’re feeling frustrated and guilty for being ‘behind’ remember this: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. You set your own deadlines! And you’re the only one you need to be accountable to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. It’s more than ok to ask for help. The end result won’t be any less your own achievement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Sometimes things just take time. One day the puzzle pieces might slot into place unexpectedly and you’ll think ‘ohhh, THAT’S why it had to wait til now’. And it will be all the better for it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Stop focusing on what you haven’t done YET. • Think instead about what you ARE doing and the steps you CAN take now. • And let people help you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Above all, be kind to yourself . PLEASE HELP A WRITER WITH CANCER--my brother-in-law, Ryan. (link in bio or https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/q86q2l/donate ) I've been quiet on social media for the past 1 1/2 weeks because it's been a really rough time for our family. My sweet brother-in-law started feeling ill about a month ago, and then everything tumbled downhill rapidly. He was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer, angiosarcoma, a sneaky and aggressive bastard that does a lot of damage before it's noticed. The doctors are now trying everything they can to save his life. Ryan is a high school English teacher, and one of his biggest dreams is to become a published YA fantasy author. He's also a devoted husband and a doting father to a 6-year-old son. He is the younger brother of my husband, #geminaTom. Our reading and writing community is such a wonderful, supportive, generous place, and it would mean the world to me if you could help out a little, if it's possible for you. Even $5 here and there would add up to help Ryan's family with medical bills, groceries, and the basics of holding steady. My first experience of FOMO was when I was just 5 years old... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was sleeping over at my best friend’s house and we were having a lovely time playing My Little Pony (she had the one with the sparkly hair) when my mum called to check on me. She said my cousins were coming over to play with my sisters. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Well, that was it. All I could think about was all the fun they’d be having - without me! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I HAD to go home. (I know... I was a terrible friend and I STILL feel guilty about it.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The thing is, as my friend’s parents dropped me home, they mentioned they were going to a funfair. The one with the suuuuuper high swings, all the way up in the sky (the same ones I visited 10 years later that had mysteriously ‘shrunk’ to about 5 feet off the ground) ‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My little 5-year old heart was broken. And for the rest of the day, I couldn’t have any fun with my sisters or my cousins because all I could think about was what I was missing out on at the funfair. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why am I telling you this tragic tale?
