Everything is connected ♾ The body cavities (thorax, abdomen & pelvis) are interconnected and movement in one will cause a ripple effect onto another. For example, respiratory movements (movement of the ribcage and thoracic diaphragm) cause movement in the neck and pelvis. This is why, as Osteopaths, we treat the body holistically! So if you come in for shoulder pain, don’t be surprised if you also get treatment through your pelvis! Video by @boneman.pro

PELVIC-SHOULDER LINKS- the concepts of connectivity and global movement are difficult to conceptualize as we have a affinity for mechanistic, linear principles as western humans. Fascial chains have become a popular concept amongst manual therapists and they are an excellent model to get therapists to think in terms of “connection” rather than isolation. Tensegrity is also accepted by many as an explanation for the unified motions we see in the body. While some would question the literal application of fascial chains or tensegrity models in the body, one cannot help but see it as a WHOLE and not a collection of parts. Fascia is the system that binds the body together as a whole and transmits energy and information from one part to the entirety of the structure. LH Joseph (2016) showed a direct link between pelvic motion and it’s effect on the shoulder. Joseph found unilateral saroiliac joint dysfunction altered myofascial force transmission across oblique sling muscles and caused anterior translation of the contralateral humeral head. This abnormal humeral head position was linked to impingement, injuries of the rotator cuff and labrum but was also shown to often correlate with lumbopelvic dysfunction on the opposite side. This video helps one visualize such effects in the body, watch how pelvic motion and shoulder girdle motion happen simultaneously. Models are necessary to help “see” what is possible in the body @boneman.pro #anatomylinks #fascia #anatomy #anatomia #biomechanics #fascial #chiropractic #osteopathy #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #yoga #pilates #training #sportsmedicine #shoulderpain #skeleton #functionaltraining #stretching #orthopedics #function #sportstherapy #massage #baseball #throwing #muscles

So excited to be back teaching Essentrics Barre Tuesday PM @essentricsstudio ✨ * #EssentricsBarre is a regular Essentrics class with barre stretching/ toning at the end. After taking a month off my barre class I can’t believe how different my hips feel from not doing these stretches to help unlock my hips and lower back (once a week). It’s amazing what stretching your lower body can do for your back, core and posture. I really recommend to try and get at least one lower body chair or barre stretch a week to keep your full body balanced. ➡️ Join me @essentricsstudio or hit the link in bio to try from home #worthit #essentrics #barrestretch #hipsdontlie . . . #hipmobility #rangeofmotion #essentricseveryday #athletestretch #trainlikeanathlete #runnersstretch #quadstretch #postureworkout #fascia #agingbackwards #mobility #flexibilityworkout #adidaswomen #nikewomen #hockeystretch #hippain #backpain #postworkout #recovery #rebalance #fasciarelease #backpainrelief

CONNECTIVE TISSUE MATRIX- the challenge of anatomical education is conveying the true 3-dimensional nature of the body via 2-D books and pictures. Unless one has the luxury of doing a fresh cadaver dissection, they may understandably be limited in their ability to conceptualize the 3D nature of the body and its tissues. However, modern technology does help us “see” the true landscape of the body without cutting it apart and dividing it unnaturally. This video shows a unique view of a human thigh/femur in a cross sectional view. The researchers dissolved the cellular tissues in a solvent and were left with only the fibrous connective tissue elements in their true shape. You can see how the fascial tissue is continuous and it LINKS together in a 3D way, enveloping the femur in the center and housing all of the muscular compartments. This helps our minds get into a global, 3D vision of the body and out of the “sectional”, divided body of individual muscles. After seeing this, how is it possible to get only one muscle of the thigh to contract without it affecting this effecting the entire network of tissues 360 degrees around the the leg? The concept of isolation in the body begins to disappear when we see these views. We are left with connections, relationships, continuity, contiguity and globality in 3D and then we begin to understand the LIVING anatomy. “Studying a preserved cadaver is like studying a telephone pole to find out how a tree works”- Dr. Rollin Becker #anatomylinks #anatomy #fascia #anatomie #biomechanics #biotensegrity #osteopathy #chiropractic #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #acupuncture #yoga #massage #training #muscle #knowledge #learning #body

Child's pose with a twist (AKA thread the needle) is a simple movement that effectively stretches the lats, assists with thoracic mobility, and opens the chest & shoulders. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ (Just what we all need ).⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ 1️⃣ Start in a child's pose position.⁣⠀ ⁣2️⃣ Thread your right arm under you and rotate your torso to stretch out that left shoulder.⁣⠀ 3️⃣ You can reach your left arm behind your back like I do, or keep it pressed to the floor. ⁣⠀ ⁣4️⃣ Hold for 10 seconds. ⁣⠀ 5️⃣ Switch sides and repeat steps 1-3.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ This stretch is also one of my favorite yoga poses. I'm curious, do you guys practice yoga? ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Views by @iksonofficial⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ #yogaeverydamnday #childspose #athletictraining #chiropractor #chiropracticcare #fascia #sportstherapy #movementspecialist #chiro #hipmobility #muscletension #technech #textneck #hipopener #backstretch #spinalcare #posturecorrection #goodposture #injuryprevention #sportsinjury #activehealth #9to5life #correctiveexercise #wellness #functionalwellness #mobilitywod #threadtheneedle #backpain #prehab #thoracicspine⁣⠀

・・・ Fascia, adhesions, and 'knots' Fascia is connective tissue that is woven around each and every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein in our bodies, as well as internal organs, including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. It quite literally holds us together. Essentially, without it we’d be a pile of slush on the floor. If you picture an orange, it is not dissimilar to the transparent layer that surrounds each segment. It’s a thin white layer beneath the skin. This fibrous tissue can tend to get stuck in areas - otherwise known as "knots" that will quicken over time, with injury. Additionally, adhesive build up can and will occur from any operations and or surgical procedures. As fascia is connected from our head to our tippy toes, you can see how these adhesions or knots would absolutely limit mobility, size, strength, symmetry, and cause pain in different areas throughout the body. As a Structural Integrative Sports Therapists, I will often use myofascial release as part of session treatments for the widespread or central, dull and achy pain. ‍♀️ #adhesion #ache #deeptissue #fascia #guasha #myofascialcupping #painmanagement #structuralintergation #sportsscience #massagetherapy #jessahartlmt #whathealingfeelslike

How cool is this cross section of a muscle?! Even more interesting is the connective tissue (white net-like stuff) also known as FASCIA. As you can see, (unlike muscle) fascia is multidirectional which is why we sometimes begin our treatments with a sort of spreading technique without the use of lotion or oils, this mobalizes the superficial fascia so that treatment can be applied to the muscles directly. This connective tissue can be found at nearly every level of the human body from the microscopic where it can be seen surrounding individual muscle fibres, to the visible and palpable(!) where muscle attaches to muscle and in areas of scarring or repetitive strain (as well as pretty much everywhere else). Let’s talk about what we can do for the myofascial restrictions in YOUR body! Feel free to message me with any questions or inquiries, or ask your RMT at your next appointment. We’d love to chat more about it • Posted @withrepost thanks to @torontormt • #health #wellness #massage #rmt #muskoka #muskokarmt #muscle #fascia #fascialstretch #fascialrelease #myofascialrelease #science #massage #massagetherapy #mobility #weloveourjob #rmt #dogood #justbreathe @massage_muskoka

From Tom: The black and white image (swipe to see!) shows the major fascial divisions of the compartments of the leg. In this new image, you can not only see the compartments, you can see how the interosseous membrane is wrapped around both bones, but most of all, you can see how the fascia is organized within them, almost like veins. Hooray for the Fascia Research Society and the Fascial Net Plastination Project for giving us these useful images, as well as beautiful ones; an amazing visual for both manual therapists and movement professionals. From the Fascial Net Plastination Project: In truth, our bodies are #one#continuous #fabric. There are no layers that just fall off of each other without some prodding, prying or actual cutting. In that regard you can say we only have #one #single #layer; but when you take into account the #densities, #textures and molecular & cellular components, you can conceive of five primary layers to our bodies: #Skin, #Superficial Fascia, #Deep Fascia, #Muscle and #Bone. Of course it quickly gets a little more complicated than just that, but it's a good place to start! Photo Credit: ©2018FasciaResearchSociety.org/plastination.
