Today’s Inspiration: Sir Edwin “Hardy” Amies In Belgium, after D-Day, Hardy Aimes got in trouble with his military superiors- a Lt.Colonel wasn’t supposed to be arranging for photo shoots with Vogue. As a young man, Amies had spent time traveling through Europe, picking up languages as he went. Because of this preternatural ability, he became an intelligence officer during the war, working on sabotage missions, sending spies behind enemy lines, and even helping to orchestrate an operation focused on assasinating double agents and Nazi sympathizers. Amies famously had his uniform tailored on Savile Row, and you can guess what people thought about that. When he was a child, Amies’ mother had worked for two important design houses, and when he decided to pursue a career in fashion, he was able to utilize her connections to become managing director of Lachesse (c 1934). In 1937, his work was first featured in Vogue, in a photograph taken by Cecil Beaton. In 1941 he began to work for Worth. In 1945 the Countess of Jersey (why are all of the best countesses named Virginia?) finance a move that would become Hardy Amies, Ltd; He opened his house around 1946, on Savile Row, which is interesting because he designed clothing for both genders. Around 1950 he was commissioned to make a few dresses for (then) Princess Elizabeth’s official tour of Canada. From the time she ascended the throne in 1952, until his retirement in 1989, he was one of her official dressmakers. Amies designed the costumes for Kubrick’s 2001:A Space Odyssey.
