This is how many fawns become orphaned. With roads, fences, and development slicing through deer habitat, even the smallest and most rural towns can be like obstacle courses for deer. Young fawns following their mothers can't jump as high as their mothers and often get stuck on the other side of the fence. This can be a matter of life or death for a fawn like this. Usually the mothers will pace back and forth, sometimes for days, while the fawn tries desperately to get over. Fawns become exhausted and dehydrated trying to get out, and often even get tangled and injured in fencing attempting to jump over. After a few days the mother will eventually give up and leave the fawn. If you see a fawn trapped on your property, and you see the mother nearby, the best thing you can do is open up a gate in your fence to let the fawn out. Don't try and chase the fawn, just watch and give the fawn some time to find the exit (this can take hours). If you can't see the mother or can't open up the fence, call your local wildlife rescue and ask for their advice. As you head out this holiday weekend, please remember that there are lots of newly born wildlife out there as well. It's one of the many joys of spring time. That said... It's important not to inadvertently become a fawn-napper! Every year we get calls about "abandoned fawns". In reality, a fawn by itself is normal and sometimes well intentioned people end up kidnapping fawns under the assumption that they are rescuing them. Mother deer will leave their babies alone for up to 12 hours at a time, only returning for brief periods to clean and feed them. This is good mothering; she needs to keep her distance from her scentless fawn as not to attract predators, not to mention she needs time to graze and rest. Sometimes an inexperienced doe will leave her baby somewhere strange, like on your front porch. Don't worry, she'll be back to move it. So don't approach fawns and certainly restrain from touching or feeding them, even though they are so cute. If you don't know if it's hurt or needs help give us a ring. Yesterday's Open Volunteer Workday was very productive! One of the things we did was finish setting up the fawn room and outdoor fawn patio. We have 14 babies so far and another on the way today. We're already using 8 gallons of fawn formula a day and the season has just started! As the babies get bigger, we will expand their area to go out into the woods.
