TIP OF THE DAY: Are you looking to get more height and spring on your flip jump? Try this sequence:

Do this exercise at the barrier, you should always have at least one hand on the barrier for safety. The fall we want to avoid it backwards So make sure you stand tall and keep you weight slightly forward at all times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
Keep your legs straight throughout and stand on your toe picks. Make sure you always take small steps, keeping the heal lifted as much as possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
There are four different directions of step:
• Forwards
• Sideways left foot lead
• Sideways right foot lead
• Backwards
Make sure you do at least 10m of toe steps with each direction (I usually ask my skaters to walk the full length of the rink).

When we jump we bend and rise, so we need to reinforce this movement more within our exercises. This exercise has been tweaked to specifically to help encourage this action. To begin with skate this exercise on a hockey circle.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Start with a right back outside three turn, with the weight through the right shoulder and hip. Extend the free-leg and arms so they are directly above the circle you’re skating on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s the important part, make sure bend and press the heal of the skating foot into the circle. Rise up to release the three turn. Make sure you stay up in knee after the turn and fully extend the free-leg in front.

It’s very important not to pull the turn with the left shoulder, this disconnects the hips and shoulder The turn is initiated by the press and release of the skating foot, then the right shoulder driving through.
Now do a tidy right forward inside open mohawk, extending the free-legs to build more strength. You can now push on the right foot again to repeat the exercise. Do this exercise in both directions.

MY PROCESS: Once I’ve created the intro to a program, I then break down the details of my choreo to my skater. I have them do the choreo alongside me so they can gauge which movements go to with each beat of the song. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once they have it down with the music, I try to get a video of us doing the choreo together so I can evaluate what looks best on the skater. Some moves that I create may look good on me, but they do not necessarily work on everyone else so getting to see a side by side visual of my skater next to me can help with eliminating certain moves. TIP OF THE DAY: Are you looking to develop effortless and fast spins? I have simple tips that make a world of difference because believe it or not, you need more than just flexibility to make this happen. Spins also require balance, coordination, and leg strength. Here is my go to tip for the Catchfoot Spin: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Start at the wall and stretch your freeleg in a camel spin position. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ Next, bend you freeleg and reach your opposite hand towards the blade to tap 3 times in order to work the hamstring and glutes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣ On the 3rd tap, grasp the blade and pull your foot up to the sky. Your shoulder will be sore, but try to reach it as close to your ear as possible to help you get your freeleg as close being above your head as possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4️⃣ Finally, go for the spin and try to replicate all the steps you did on the wall. You want to hold the camel spin for at least 3 steady revolutions before reaching for your foot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This exercise looks relatively simple on the surface, but it’s how it’s executed that is important. You MUST be sharp and efficient with your movements, staying tall and tight.

Enter backwards and press to the right with the arms and shoulders (left for clockwise jumpers). Stand tall then enter a right back outside twizzle. Initiate the rotation from the ankle and NOT by pulling the shoulders around. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stay tall tight and right throughout crossing the free-leg (stay left for clockwise jumpers). After 2-4 complete rotations exit with a single loop jump. Do this jump by springing from the ankle and not by pulling the arms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t forget to stretch hold and press your landing position. A jump sold by the landing so don’t be lazy (yes I went there ).
