How to shoot magic? ✨And create composite photos? I get this question all the time. But again, instead of just making a “how to” post, with info you can find anywhere on the web, I want to share “how not to”. Below are 7 mistakes I made when shooting composites. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is a bit advanced, if you guy’d like a more basic post on what compositing is, let me know in the comments below. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I didn’t follow the light: I always shoot with natural light, which is impossible to control. So when I shoot on a windy day with periods of sunlight and clouds covering the sky some of the elements that I was shooting for a composite were shot in bright sunlight and some in the soft ambient light. Couldn’t put them together afterwards! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ didn’t have a tripod: not a dreadful mistake, but still makes things much more complicated. A tripod will keep your camera in the same place, when you’re shooting, explaining your model what to do and correcting your assistants. Why does it have to be at the same place? cause you’ll create one image out of 50-100 you shoot on location. So, if you don’t have a tripod notice which height you’re shooting from (e.g. your eye level) and the exact spot on the ground where you shoot from to get the best result of a no-tripod situation and not to make the following mistake ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ changed my position: half of my composite elements were shot from one angle, and half from a completely different one. It was next to impossible to glue all the parts together in a believable way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope you find these useful, and I’ll go on with these tomorrow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Model @mina_beye Special thanks to @ai_berezina

If you are thinking of selling your images for book covers (through photo agencies - see the beginning in the previous post) keep in mind that: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ as a rule, publishers are searching for something not too much out there. The best selling photos are of people in vintage clothes, in nature or in retro settings. So if that’s your cup of tea, go ahead! in many cases it’s not like sending your images and forgetting about them, you still need to upload, keyword and categorise your photos, which is lots of work and a huge pain (at least for me) you won’t probably be able to make a living out of it, unless you shoot tons of images and follow client briefs (meaning you shoot something upon a request from the agency) More helpful facts: yes, one photo can be sold multiple times e.g. to different countries prices for photos will depend on the number of copies of the book and on the county where it’s published not all the agencies will disclose the price that the client actually paid for your image, they will only give you your share. Now, I’m really interested in what you experience has been with selling photos for book covers? Please share below!

Should you take part in photo contests or not I was struggling with this question for a long time and below are a few reasons to say yes to photo contests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ you learn to get conscious about what you’re trying to say with your work. In many cases it won’t be accepted without a proper description. you get challenged: especially, if you’re applying for a competition not with your existing work, but creating something specifically for the contest. you can sell your work better: the list of your awards will play a great role, when you’ll be selling your art. the more awards you have, the bigger price you can ask for your work. you get valuable partnership opportunities: winning prestigious competitions helps you to get noticed by brands, particularly photography brands. One thing that’s important to understand about them though, is that they won’t necessarily tell you about the level of your mastery. It’s definitely true in some cases. Yet, if you didn’t win, it doesn’t mean that your art is bad. It might mean that the jury appreciates photography of a different type. That’s it. ‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So it also helps checking out the past winners when you apply. If you totally dislike every photo that won last year, don’t think that you’ll be able to change the jury’s tastes with your masterpieces this year. Another thing that matters is the number of contests you take part in. @hardibudi, who I interviewed recently, is the winner of over 100 photography awards. How he achieved those results? He applies for at least 60-70 contests per year! And of course his photography is great ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, if you applied for just one or two, don’t get discouraged so quickly. Try again, again, and again. And yes, you’ll need a budget for it. Only very few contests are free to participate. But if you’re serious about your photography, all the investments will pay off in the future! How many photography contests have you applied for this year? Share below!

Practical tip on working with references (or “ideas”, as many of us call references): don’t copy the hell out of them! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Take one element that you like the most (might be some surreal stuff, cool hairstyle, interesting pose) and “borrow” it, so that all the other elements come from you: your location, tastes, backgrounds and values. Choose you own colors, your own setting, your own angle, your own face type for the model. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Better still, if you can work with several radically different references and get 1 element from each of them and create your own UNIQUE combination. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And don’t get discouraged, if it doesn’t seem authentic for the first 5, 10 or 50 times. Keep searching and you’ll develop the muscle of being able to connect the dots. And people will recognize that in your work! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How do you work with reference images? Share below, I’m awfully curious!
