Last evening, just after supper, my four-year-old nephew had a question for me. I know this because he sidled up to me, quietly took me hand, and said-yelled that he had a question for me (and if you ever get the opportunity to be this boy’s uncle, might I highly recommend that you take it because the say-yelling is beyond priceless). Then came the question (of the minute): ‘why don’t you live here at Grandma’s all the time?’ ‘I have my own house, buddy, and I visit Grandma and Grandpa lots and lots, just like you,’ I replied. There came a pause and a think and a reply: ‘but it would be a way lot more fun if you lived here.’ And then it was my turn to pause because, frankly, the child had a point. When I was a little younger (but a little older than four), all I wanted was to be a grown up, a real-life grown up person with a home and all the other grown up things. But last evening, after supper, my nephew’s say-yelled question got me to thinking: why the rush to grow up? At his Grandma’s house (also ‘Grandpa’s house’ but Grandpa doesn’t buy toys so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t count when you’re four) there are always snacks and games and toys and cuddles and why would anyone NOT want to live at Grandma’s house (also ‘Grandpa’s house’)? Hmm. I like snacks. A lot. And I do like games and toys and cuddles (who doesn’t?) and maybe my nephew is right and, really, who wouldn’t want to live at his Grandma’s house? He was still looking at me, not yet moved on to his next question (of the minute) and all I could think to do was smile. ‘You’re absolutely right, buddy.
