True life of a pilot, pt4 - seniority In some airlines the date on which you join the company is very important. It dictates when you will have leave, what flights/rosters you will get and when you will be able to upgrade to another position (ex. when you become a captain). It is a first come, first serve system. The longer you are working in the company, the higher you get on the list. A higher seniority means you have more control/options in your worklife. What this system doesn’t account for is experience you may have gotten in other airlines. So you could have been flying for years in a certain position, and when moving companies you might have to start all the way at the bottom again. This makes changing airlines very difficult at times. The ‘easiest’ thing would be to join one airline and stay there for your entire career. But we all know life doesn’t always work like that... As you can see on the picture I have flown for four airlines.
