I modeled this dress for @wildfellhall, and it did indeed sell, but unbeknownst to me the purchaser was John! Seeing this beautiful red flower in our house, he surprised me with the dress and took this photo in front of our William Morris portiere. The 1920s Prussian green dress is embellished with heavily beaded bouquets, the colorful stamens protruding as loops of beads (the flowers may be Gaillardia). The plant I am holding is generally referred to as Amaryllis and is indeed a genus of Amaryllidaceae, but is more accurately a Hippeastrum, "knight's star flower," the name it received from an early Victorian British botanist. Floral bouquets were an important offering in ancient Egyptian temple rituals, and kings often appear before divine statues, ensconced within portable barques, holding flower arrangements nearly as tall as the rulers themselves. Large standing bouquets appear in association with divine standards alongside divine barques set up within the innermost rooms of temples. These bouquets appear to have been distributed then to some people during festivals, just as we find statues of officials carrying representations of what appear to be those actual divine staves as marks of favor and status. Apparently such objects absorb the divine aura, like batteries, that then fuel further rituals. I recently described the garden area surrounding ancient Egyptian temples, and a hymn to the goddess Isis at the small temple of el-Qala near Coptos describes the king bringing great hetepou-bouquets made of plants that the text associates in their growth and origins with the return of the solar eye goddess.
