Nasa has taken a series of history-making photographs. The pictures show shockwaves from two supersonic aircraft interacting mid-flight. Capturing these shockwaves interacting mid-air in a photograph is important as it will give researchers information about how these shockwaves work, which could have a big impact on designing supersonic aircraft in the future. Subject: The Coandă effect The Coandă effect is the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface. As described by the eponymous Henri Coandă in different patents: "the tendency of a jet of fluid emerging from an orifice to follow an adjacent flat or curved surface and to entrain fluid from the surroundings so that a region of lower pressure develops." The pressure effect, which is usually not indicated, is fundamental for the comprehension of the Coandă effect. Text from this movie: "So, one would expect the air to flow out of the fan horizontally in all directions, but due to the Coanda effect; the air bends down, to almost 90 degrees The airflow is being pushed down by the air above, because the pressure of the air in between the flow and the curved surface, is reduced by the suction of the airflow. Next, an other example of the Coanda effect, where I used smoke to make the flow visible. Air is being accelerated down, and part of the upper surface is in touch with reduced air pressure. This action gives the object a force up, thrust, that can lift the object. Henri Coanda realized this, and then designed a flying disc based on this effect, in 1932!"
