#tuesdaytip : If your job requires you to sit most of the day, your back needs a little bit of liberating! The best way to liberate your back is with some thoracic extension and backbending. This is easily done with some basic yoga and fitness props. With a foam roller you can focus on thoracic extension (the upper part of your back). Place the foam roller where a heart rate monitor would go and lean back. If you want to add some dynamic movement feel free to add some “crunch” like movements. With a Fit Ball/Stability Ball, roll back (like you are doing wheel pose) and reach our hands towards the back of the room/wall. Let your whole back take on the shape of the ball. This take is a great prep pose for Wheel and counteracts the effects of sitting as it stretches the whole spine. #tuesdaytip : Improve Your Back Extension and Back Flexibility . . Today’s tip is inspired by one of clients at @evolvefitnessokc who asked me what she can do to improve her back flexibility. She was surprised that some of my exercises were strength based. Strength and flexibility go hand in hand. Strength training makes you stronger and flexibility training decreases injury which can help you train even harder. Stretching increases time under tension without adding fatigue, which will help you gain strength. Lastly, they BOTH improve range of motion. Just remember, when working back extension To focus on the movement initiating from the upper back and keeping the neck in line with the spine. It’s also back extension not hip extension, so really think about planting the lower body down to the ground. Foam rollers! An effective way of reducing muscle tension and increasing muscle length. . According to @acefitness... . “Foam rolling creates length change based on the principle of Autogenic inhibition ....Autogenic inhibition is the response that occurs when a muscle is placed under tension...The pressure of the foam roller on the muscle increases tension on the muscle fibers, signaling the GTO to allow the muscle spindles and fibers to lengthen.” . Also it just feels really great! This is especially true if you have tight IT bands which are hard to get to with regular stretching. . Here I am using the roller to further engage my abs. The roller gives you a tactile sensation so you can get that feeling of really sinking your navel down towards your back while finding and holding a neutral spine. .
