Organic and local are always best. The #dirtydozen is released each year by the @environmentalworkinggroup to help us when choosing our fruit and veggies. It's important to keep in mind that processed foods will have pesticides in them too, so boycotting the veg on this list and just eating packaged bikkies and chocolate isn't really the answer.
70% of produce sold in the USA has pesticide residue on it even after washing, and almost every US citizen has detectable pesticide levels in their blood, urine and, for the recent mums, in their breast milk too. A wide range of health effects are associated with exposure to some pesticides, and the combined effects of the cocktail we ingest is only just beginning to be uncovered.
The answer? Join your local community or school garden, plant a seed in a pot on your balcony, trade with your neighbours, head down to the farmers market and meet your local food producers, or sign up to a veg box scheme. Fresh local food is better for us, and it tastes better too!

Good morning, lovelies! Monday is here and I’m back to the grind, tired but alive and I’m grateful, as always and we are one week out from my favorite holiday, Earth Day As we prep for Mother Earths appreciation day, it’s a great time to think about all the little things we do that effect our beautiful and fragile environment. There are so many things that have an impact it can be challenging and overwhelming to try and do ANYTHING to help but I truly believe WE ALL make an impact
•
One environmental aspect I try to focus on is food sourcing. Working in organic food these last four years I’ve learned how important having clean crops is for our environment. Foods that are genetically modified to withstand chemically rich pesticides have a domino effect on our landscape.
•
Example: while GMO corn may be able to withstand heavy pesticides, the soil, insect pollinators, and surrounding landscape are NOT! These pesticides act as antibiotics depleting the soil of nutrients, threatening our now endangered bee populations, leaking into our water systems, and get absorbed into the fruit of the crops we then consume
•
One of the main reasons I hear of why people can’t purchase organic is because of high costs and, believe me, I totally understand! While I have a TON of tips to help folks start purchasing organic, I like to first suggest focusing on the “dirty dozen” (crops that are most heavily sprayed and tend to have thin skins). I’ve included a link below from @onegreenplanet
