I almost never post about my “other life” as this page is typically based around my artistic endeavors. But considering this year I enter my 15th as an educator, I felt it appropriate to make a lengthy and heartfelt post as I reflect on this particular journey. My apologies in advance if this is long-winded. . Now I know it’s unpopular (especially in hip hop) to even hint at the fact that I have a “day job,” as I simultaneously pursue my passions. Even my students still ask me, why do I still teach if I am a producer? I tell them that I’ve never felt defined by one task or talent in my life. I’m a creative and creatives do as much as they can to impact the world. Parts of my life are fulfilled in different ways and I don’t consider being a teacher vs being an entrepreneur. I see them as two parts of my life that “nourish” each other. . So, before every late night session of mine, my day begins with over a hundred amazing children. It’s introduced me to individuals who have helped take my passions to new levels and its allowed me the communication, organization, and countless other skills needed to execute my plans. Most importantly, it has offered me the deep lasting connections that have helped shape my perspectives and art. . My work day seems to never end and I’m horribly compensated for my time. It’s a heavy profession that takes patience and an ability to genuinely connect to people. But knowing that almost 15 years later, former students still seek me out to join them on their own personal journeys, and speak of my class as the one that inspired them to be more than just one “thing” in this life, and to pursue every passion that’s inside of them, is a blessing no “connect” can ever eclipse. . So in closing, if you’ve ever had a class of mine, I want to send the sincerest thank you. One of my greatest creations has been the connection I’ve built with all of you and your friendships have meant more to me than you will ever know. I love you all, and I’ll always be proud of you.
