Kuchisake-onna (lit. "slit mouthed woman") is one of the Yokai's with a very tragic story. She once was a beautiful, young woman that lived in a Japanese village. People told her all the time just how pretty she was. Being married to a samurai, she started a love affair with a noble soldier. When her husband found out, he asked the soldier in anger, "Why my wife?", to which the soldier replied "For she is the most beautiful woman in the village." The samurai found the soldier to be very honest and reasonable. Once at home, he took his sword upon his wife's face, slitting her mouth from ear to ear, in an attempt to take away her beauty.
