We subscribe to the philosophical lineage of non-duality. Non-duality offers an approach to understanding the true nature, or reality, of ourselves and of the universe. We are drawn to this approach because of its use of logic and experiential evidence in determining how best to live life. What’s more, our teachers encourage us to eliminate all beliefs from our minds, including any belief we may take on from the teaching. (This is sometimes not the case in other lineages or with other teachers, where students are often coerced into believing something without evidence or explanation.) . . But we also get that non-duality is not for everyone. In fact, most of our closest relationships are with people who couldn’t care less about non-duality. But they still care about living well. They still care about happiness. They still care about understanding themselves. They still care about their pain points. They just don’t see philosophy as a tool for solving their problems (which is totally valid). . . And so, part of our journey over the last several years has not only been in understanding the tenets of non-duality for ourselves, but in reimagining the material in conversations with our friends. Instead of imposing non-dual vocabulary or philosophy on someone who’s not interested, how can I relate my understanding to my loved one from their point of view? How can I use their vocabulary when I talk to them? How can I connect with them without needing to prove a point? . . This is our experiment. Maintaining our loving relationships by sharing only what’s relevant to each person. Only answering questions when asked. Learning how to be compassionate towards contrasting views. Because at the end of the day, it’s not non-duality that’s important. It’s happiness. And this is how we’ve found ourselves passionate about bringing these intellectual discourses into our culture--because we all need happiness but we don’t all need non-duality.
