One of these birds is not like the others! And she’s ruining my lovely uniform shots of my Dominique flock! . This girl is quite the chicken, though. She’s an Easter Egger who was with our main pasture flock, until she decided to start ducking under the fence to explore the woods on her own every day. For awhile I think she’d let herself back in and roost in the eggmobile coops with her flock mates at night. We chased her back in so many times. . At a certain point she gave up going back in and started roosting in trees at night and laying her eggs in a barrel of logs next to our tiny house. And then she really went too far and I discovered a nest of her beautiful blue eggs in the compost pile that we put our humanure compost in!!! . We gave up trying to get her back in, especially now that the chickens are on the north pasture, hundreds of yards away from where she apparently wants to be. And we resigned that if she got eaten by a predator, that’s her fault. When you have hundreds of chickens, there’s only so much you’re going to do for a non conformer. . But MONTHS have gone by and she’s still around. And she’s gradually been cozying up to the free range Dominique flock. And then, it finally happened. Two mornings ago when I opened their coop, out she came with them, sticking out like a sore thumb! . I guess after months sleeping alone, she decided that the Dominique coop suited her fancy. Sylvester: the last of our original chickens. We purchased our very first chickens about three years ago. We got four “teenage” hens and three turned out to be roosters. We rehomed one and lost two over the last few years. Sylvester, originally named Sylvia, is still going on strong!! We really do cherish this sweet, chatty boy so much
