Hey you ! Strong person! Ever tried rack holds ?
Why not ?
If you can’t hold it in the rack you’ll never press it. I promise. The rack doesn’t have to be that comfortable, or even have to be for a long period of time. But a good solid rack position is a must for a good solid press.
I was introduced to these at a @strongfirst cert a few years back. My personal record in the kettlebell press leading up to this was a whopping 40kg . So Pavel Tsatsouline got me to clean a larger bell, a 48 kilo. Then he got me to hold it in the rack for a few seconds while generating maximum tension in all my muscles, planking my whole body. Then out the 48 down, shake the tension off, relax for 10 or 20 seconds. Next, I cleaned my target kettlebell (the 44) and what do you know it shot up overhead to an easy lockout. Smooth as a pint of Guinness.
So rack holds work. How do you use them ?
As above. On test days do short heavier holds before you press.
On training days you can do longer timed holds.
Use them to warm up. Add in some front squats.
Or you can use them as a pretty effective trunk exercise, as I do sometimes.
