In a city as dense as Bogotá, Colombia, the only way is up when it comes to restoring green space lost to urbanisation. #Santalaia has led the way, with this 11-storey vertical garden providing a beautiful hit of nature while acting as a giant air purifier for the local area. Designed and built by @groncol, using the innovative F+P system, the residential building is wrapped in a lush skin of 115,000 plants and shrubs spanning 3100sq m of walls and rooftops. A vertical garden of this size can process 1708 pounds of heavy metals, filter more than 2000 tonnes of harmful gases and catch more than 881 pounds of dust a year. An innovative irrigation system uses recycled water and on rainy days, a computer lets the building know the garden doesn’t need watering. It’s an absolute green wonder! @Groncol - Infraestructura Verde

@tonyowenpartners has reimagined Flemington, the historical site of Sydney’s produce markets, as a model of urban renewal in the 21st century. The project includes a mix of all elements needed for a sustainable future in one place — urban agriculture, employment, high-density living — and retains some market uses. It tackles the heat island effect, which can make cities 3C hotter, by using green roofs and giving 90% of the land surface over to parks, paddocks, and agriculture to supply 30% of the needs of the residents. The speculative design includes 10,000 dwellings, offset by large areas for urban agriculture including fields for crops, grains, herbs, flowers and orchards as well as parks, and community spaces. Let’s hope it becomes a reality!

Do you want to live in the future of Winy Maas? •• "There are deficits in architecture education. Much of this type of education is about 'conformation', more than innovation," says Winy Maas •• "It will be wise to develop alternative tools within the educational system, so other models than let’s say this copy-cat or simulation school," adds Winy Maas of @mvrdv and @thewhyfactory_twf

Incorporating green infrastructure into cities worldwide will help reduce carbon emissions and give a new sense of life to urban areas. We’re not saying all buildings need plants covering them, but we do need to be mindful of the harm only glass, steel and limestone does to the human psyche. *

This collaborative project was created by Year 5 Architecture MArch student Daryll R. Brown and Yiki Liong.
In response to Moscow's grand re-housing scheme, the pair designed a series of cellular neighbourhood modules challenging the scale and density of future cities, distributed upon the gradients of oblique planes.
