Gel Seeding⠀ (This idea is from the September/October 1990⠀ Organic Gardener)⠀ ⠀ An easy technique developed by Roger Kline, senior extension associate at Cornell University, provides an intermediate step between using transplants and direct seeding.⠀ First, mix 1 tbsp of corn starch with 1 cup of water, boil and then allow to cool to a free-flowing gel. Second, add about one-eighth cup of pre-germinated seeds and pour the whole mix into a plastic sandwich bag. Seal the top and then cut a corner of the bag. Third, squeeze the gel and seeds into a shallow trench in the garden and cover. This works best with the small-seeded crops such as onions, mustard, spinach, lettuce and parsley. The larger-seeded crops, like peas, corn or squash, are harder to catch at the right stage of sprouting. If you have a problem with fire ants (we don't here in Idaho), you might try this as a natural solution to the problem.⠀ Go to the grocery store and buy a box of grits (if you don't have some already). Just sprinkle them around the fire ant mound on a dry day. Spring Planting⠀ I just planted some green onions and snow peas in my raised bed! ⠀ Good Bye Winter (I hope).⠀ Anyway, after I worked some fresh compost into the bed, I put down several layers of newspaper. For the onions, I used a knife and cut a slit to plant them thru. For the snow peas, I used my dibble and just poked a hole right thru the paper and into the soil. ⠀ The paper will keep any weeds from sprouting, hold the moisture in the soil and be tilled into the ground after harvest. Stump Removal⠀ Our forefathers figured out a way to remove stumps without a lot of backbreaking work. They let Mother Nature help out. They would cut the stump as low to the ground as possible and then pile up dirt and leaves over it and then plant a couple of pumpkins. I guess that the root system helps to break the stump up. Bev noticed that the sugar ants are starting to come out, which means they are starting to come in to the house. (Again!)⠀ ⠀ Any Suggestions?⠀ ⠀ One of many recommendations for keeping the little beggars out is to use cucumber peelings. Although I admit that having cuke peelings scattered around the window sills and doorways, etc. doesn’t sound very neat, it will keep the ants out. Just remember to pick them up before company comes (the peelings) and you won’t have anything to embarrass you. You can also try cinnamon or maybe draw a chalk line.
