It was such an inspiring day today in Johannesburg as I joined the @econetzimbabwe and @yarainternational teams to launch their #GenerationAfrica initiative. .
.
This comes on the heels of my panel discussion in #Davos earlier this year with Strive Masiyiwa (Chairman &, Founder, Econet), Mr Holthester (CEO,Yara) and @rapelang where we discussed the need for an initiative that intentionally supports the rising cadre of young agri-food entrepreneurs across Africa.
.
.
Today, @gogettazafrica #Gogettaz prize was unveiled, the inaugural initiative of #GenerationAfrica. $50k each to 1 woman and 1 man who has the most innovative approach to transforming Africa's food systems. .
.
Incredibly Impressive!!
.
.
My fellow panelists were Astounding!! .
@thato_moagi_ , this young, #black, #girlboss farmer blew my mind with her inspiring story building a farming business with such confidence & poise!
.
#DalumuziMhlanga, Group Chief of Staff at Econet was so deeply connected with the issues around how technology and communications can transform and scale agri-innovations and the future of African youths.
.
#LuisAlfredoPeres, SVP for Africa of @yarainternational was spot on in his points around the role corporates and policy makers should play to pivot progress being made.
.
And @mmaponyane was such a delightful moderator asking pointed, relevant questions and guiding our conversation brilliantly!!
.
.
I'm glad I was able to make it. Long journey, so tired, but feel absolutely BLESSED!!! #GenerationAfrica #Agrifood #Youth #Entrepreneur #Africa #Transformation #Collaboration #Farming #Processing #FoodRetail #Innovation #Technology #ChangingMindsets #AgriValueChain #TransformingFoodSystems #FeedingAfrica
#ReImagining the future... I thought I’d share a few photos from the launch event in Johannesburg on 30 May of Generation Africa, a new partnership initiative of #Econet and #Yara International to support young #agripreneurs #ReImagining agri-food ventures across Africa! Our flagship event in 2019 is an online and pitch contest for young people across Africa to compete to win the inaugural #GoGettazAfrica Agripreneurship Prize. Check out www.genafrica.org if you’re interested & please share!
Joining us at the launch were two top agripreneurs, Ada Osakwe (in orange) from Nigeria and Thato Moagi of South Africa who inspire wherever they go! In 2016 Ada launched a “farm to table” concept café in Lagos called “Nuli Lounge”. Ada sources all
@nulilounge fresh fruit & veggies from local farms in Nigeria. “Nuli” comes from an Igbo word for “joy” which is what they want people to have when they eat these fresh local foods. Ada is also an agri-business investor who left government work (for Minister of Agriculture and now head of the @Afdb_Group, my friend Akin Adesina), to become an agripreneur and says she has “never looked back since!” I included a few photos of her shop in Lagos. If you’re there, check it out and tell me what you think. Another award-winning young agripreneur also shared her inspiring story at the Generation Africa launch; Thato Moagi is managing director of Legae La Banareng Farms where she developed a “hub & spoke” agri-business model that combines commercial farming, agro-processing and skills development for youth commercial farmers. She’s won both Young Farmer and Female Entrepreneur of the year in South Africa! Another rising star. I"ll write more soon.
In the group pictures are Dalumuzi Mhlanga (Chief of Staff, Econet), moderator Maps Maponyane, @adaosakwe, Thato Moagi and Luis Alfredo Perez (Head of BU Africa at Yara International). Ishmael Sunga (CEO, Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions) & our Econet Group CEO & MD, Hardy Pemhiwa also shared insights at the launch event. #GenerationAfrica #ReImagineTheFuture #GoGettazAfrica #Agripreneurship
Are you living a little and calling it life? #MaryOliver #nayyirahwaheed
.
You will have to say no to many things, people and plans because they take you away from that life. The life that is seducing your lungs.
.
But remember, it's yours. You just have to reach closer to it. It is yours. .

At @charliesbistroke in good company with amazing documentary filmmakers.
In my experience, the people who nurse the most brilliant of minds are also the most unassuming.
I totally enjoyed hanging with these amazing people!
