Today on March 4th 1936, the German-built commercial passenger airship, LZ Hindenburg, takes flight for the first time. ••••• Luftschiff Zeppelin #129, known simply as the Hindenburg, was one of the largest airships in the world at that time. It was designed, manufactured and operated by the Zeppelin Company in Germany. The ship was named after the German WWI Field Marshal, Paul von Hindenburg, who later served as the President of Germany from 1925 to 1934. The Hindenburg was over 245 meters long, which is more than two football fields long. It only had capacity for 50 to 72 passengers with an equal number of crew. It’s maiden test flight left the Zeppelin dockyards at Friedrichshafen on March 4, 1936. The Hindenburg would successfully complete 17 round trips during its first year in operation (10 to the United States and 7 to Brazil). ••••• The Hindenburg was struck by a sudden disaster while completing a transatlantic flight less than 14 months later. An unknown spark engulfed the entire airship in flames before it could land at an airstrip in Manchester Township, New Jersey. The disaster tragically claimed the lives of 36 passengers and crew. Airships had a notorious history of disasters during the early twentieth century. The British airships R38 and R101 crashed in 1921 and 1930, and respectively caused 92 fatalities. The French airship named Dixmude went down in 1923 leading to 52 deaths. And finally, the US Airships Rome and Akron experienced similar disasters leading to 107 fatalities. ••••• The structural frame and other metal scraps were sent back to Germany and recycled for the construction of Hitler’s new Luftwaffe (Air Force). Investigators never conclusively determined the exact cause of the fire. It's likely that escaping hydrogen gas had mixed with the air, igniting a sudden flame. Interesting fact - the famous rock and roll band, Led Zeppelin, adopted their name from the Hindenburg. Early on the drummer of The Who, Keith Moon, famously suggested the young band would go down like a lead zeppelin.
