The other day, we took a moment to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon launch; well, today's the anniversary of the landing. Needless to say, it was a historic achievement of engineering and imagination, but it didn't come cheap. As mentioned in an article on cbsnews.com, "Between 1960 and 1973, NASA spent $28 billion developing the rockets, spacecraft and ground systems needed for what became the Apollo program. According to a recent analysis by the Planetary Society, that translates into an estimated $288.1 billion in inflation-adjusted dollars."
Not everybody believed, then or now, that it was a worthwhile expenditure of taxpayer funds considering the challenges America faced back here on Earth; particularly, those related to poverty. Gil Scott-Heron, a self-described member of the "Common Sense Party," had this very thing in mind when he wrote the poem heard here, "Whitey On The Moon.”
