• Narcissus Garden • Throwback to that #emptyvoorlinden meet. Firstly introduced in 1966 by @YayoiKusama_, these tightly arranged 1,500 shimmering balls constructed an infinite reflective field in which the images were repeated, and distorted. When gazing into it, the viewer only saw his/her own reflection staring back, forcing a confrontation with one's own vanity and ego . w/ @bydevina . . .

In this photograph, I am looking at image 5 from the series ‘Hope’ (2007) by Erwin Olaf. It explores the relationship between dream and reality. (Both) photographed women are deep in thought. They are trapped in a perfect looking world, but something is not right. I felt as if the woman in the yellow dress emanates a huge loneliness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “What I want to show most of all is a perfect world with a crack in it. Olaf, whose recent portraits of the royal family drew widespread admiration, will turn sixty this year – a good moment to stage a major retrospective. Gemeentemuseum Den Haag shows non-commissioned work by Olaf from 2000 to his most recent series, including the work he produced in Shanghai and his most recent series Palm Springs, on display for the first time. There’s only a few weeks left to see Yayoi Kusama's "Infinity Room" exhibition at the @highmuseum! More tickets will go on sale on February 5th if you have not seen the exhibition already. I still can’t believe that I finally got to experience so many of her infinity rooms and her iconic “Obliteration Room.” My parents and I had fun placing our dots around the room that was already covered. What I love about this experience in comparison to the Infinity Rooms is that you get to actively participate. This monumental work by Color Field painter Barnett Newman instigates the reconsideration of color as an aesthetic feature in itself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a pioneer of abstract expressionism, Newman believed that large color continuums could stimulate a spiritual experience for the viewer. For Newman, the title, ‘Cathedra’ (meaning “seat” or “throne”), was linked to the Old Testament: the blue sky, the biblical throne of God, and to the connection the artist felt with mystical forces of life when creating this work. The intensity of the Cathedra-artwork arose because Barnett Newman created the blue of the painting with six separate layers of paint of various (blue) pigments. Do you like #Raphael?⁣ I admit he's not my favourite artist, but when you visit the #vaticanmusems #pinacoteca and see these three altarpieces in person, in this dramatically dark space, he kinda grows on you!⁣ The three paintings are basically a summary of his career. On the right, the Oddi Altarpiece (1502-2) is an early work for a church in #Perugia; this Coronation of the Virgin is sweet and beautiful (very similar to works by Perugino) but has an awkward division of vertical space. He resolves this completely by the Madonna di Foligno, on the left (1511-13), where our attention is drawn to the triangular composition with large figures and that iconic plaque-holding #putto.
