Happy October, everyone! My neighborhood is practically bursting with fruit right now - nearly all of these apples and crabapples were gathered on one short walk picking the discarded fruits from the ground. I see so much going to waste and it just breaks my heart! Many of these beauties will be going into a curly dock and caramel apple cake, a recipe I'm developing for a very special foraging book coming out next spring sometime (!!!) Wicked Tulip Farm invited us to glean their fields! Their picking season has ended, but #whatcheerflowerfarm gleaners were able to glean several buckets of excellent blooms. Thanks to volunteers Sarah Edwards and Erica Lasorsa for their help. These tulips will bring so much joy to the Rhode Islanders we give to via local charities. . FIGS!!! These were from a tree on an old farmhouse lot on our neighborhood that is going to be turned into six lot housing development. They tore the house and barn down over the summer and now all that’s left on the property is an apple and fig tree. Chances are the trees will get torn down, but hopefully their value will be acknowledged and they will stay. We’ll find out soon enough, but in the meantime I’m enjoying what may be the last delicious fruit from this tree!
