Oh Instagram. You fickle fickle beast. Which us small businesses rely upon and who rarely rewards us. I’m writing this as a reminder to myself. To read later and remember the bigger picture. But also because I know I can’t be the only one feeling this way at the moment.
I know that many people reading this will roll their eyes at me. Compared to many I have a huge number of Instagram followers- for which I am ever thankful for on a daily basis. BUT in the last couple of months something has changed in a dramatic way. This growth has slowed hugely, engagement is down in droves. I feel like Instagram is moving away from the amazing community where I have met so many amazing people - fellow creatives, new friends and clients- and is turning into something bigger and more faceless and... I can’t quite put my finger on it.
The beauty of having a business account is that you can see insights. I’ve talked about (a) how useful they are and (b) how they are more important than ‘hearts’ and comments are many times over on my stories. Being able to see how many people have SEEN your work is far more important. Not everyone is going to like a post- for anyone selling anything, it’s being seen, multiple times, that is the important number.
The last two months Instagram has gone from organically showing my posts to 40/50% of my followers over a short period of time, to *at most* 20%, over a stretch of days.
That stretch of days is almost as important as the drop in organic reach. Instagram algorithms have always rewarded you for early engagement, i.e people liking and commenting in the first hour of your posting. This early engagement means that the algorithm will show your post to more people. A very excellent catch 22 right there.
What can we do? I’m not sure I know. BUT I’m making the effort to remember how it started. Engaging with posts I love, commenting, liking, sharing, saving. Making sure that I try and see content from the accounts that I love and realise that I no longer see. **continued in comments. I had too much to say **

Sharing the inside of this keepsake folio from yesterday, which holds all the invitation pieces including my two favourite parts; the gold foil vellum overly of the Chateau de Robernier @chateaurobernier and the letterpress and gold foil map of France on @silkandwillow paper!
Ofcourse no invitation is complete without some extra fine twine and a gold wax seal!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday!!!
