Sis, the stats are staggering and we’re not as knowledgeable as we think- heart disease isn’t just an “older adult” disease and this could be you!
February is ❤️ health awareness month, get into it. It’s time to take control of your health⚕️❣️ .
.
.
African-American women are less likely than Caucasian women to be AWARE that heart disease is the leading cause of death
❤️
Cardiovascular disease is the No.1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths- the highest incidence being AA women.
❤️
Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly 50,000 AA women annually.
❤️
Of AA women ages 20 and older, 49 percent have heart diseases.
❤️
Only 1 in 5 AA women believes she is personally at risk.
❤️
Only 36 percent of AA women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk.
❤️
Only 52 percent of AA women are aware of the signs and symptoms of a heart attack/stroke.
❤️
Diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and a family history of heart disease are all greatly prevalent among AA and are major risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
❤️
Get active, decrease salt intake, reduce stress and know your numbers (BP, cholesterol, blood sugar & BMI).
❤️
Remember- heart disease can happen at any age!
I had no idea that cardiovascular disease is the No.1 killer of women. 1 in 3 women. That is a THIRD of mother’s, sisters, and friends. African-American women are the least likely among ALL women to consider heart disease or stroke to be the greatest health problem facing Americans today. And the sad truth is heart disease kills nearly 50,000 African-American women every year! This is why I chose to be apart of the GoRed event. I have a family history of heart disease and although I can’t change that, I/we can change personal lifestyle choices. Such as moving more, eating smarter and managing your blood pressure. #reddresscollection #goredforwomen
