Cucurbita palmata This is pretty amazing, what you see is not seed grown! 100% naturally formed all on it's own! I sowed seeds of this last April and by July some nodes along the vines produced "drop roots" if the vines were in contact with moist soil for extended periods. A few of those started to thicken, but only this one survived, probably since its in a depression and sort of shaded by the greenhouse. A few days ago I noticed gopher mounds next to where it was and cleared away the soil, and holy cow, this is what it looks like now. It probably didn't even have a 6 month season and it's at least 3" wide! Cucubita digitata also does the same drop root thing (and with less available water, even aerial in shade), and that one has a more dense and flat caudex like Ibervillea or Tumamoca.
