Yesterday was a day I had anticipated for so long
.
It was a day celebrating all the hard work and dedication, not just on my behalf, but of others who have supported me throughout this journey.
.
It was a day where I looked back at all the obstacles that presented themselves over the past year and a half, as well as over the course of my life, that could have stopped this moment from happening - but I wasn’t about to stand for that.
.
It was a day where I sat in the auditorium looking up at the stage where my professors and faculty sat and I was overwhelmed with gratitude that they care so much about their students success, they would do just about anything to make it possible. It reaffirmed my passion to be that person for MY students in the future.
.
It was a day where I heard the cheers of my family in the audience, and teared up as I got back to my seat because they are my driving force behind all I do - to have them so proud means the world to me.
.
This hood, this degree, this milestone is one that I will never take for granted. I am beyond blessed for the education I was able to receive and for the scholarships through MAO that made it possible.
.
This is only the beginning of a crazy, rewarding, challenging, most incredible uphill climb and I can’t wait to see what/who I encounter along the journey.

Before they become "educated".
Before they are handed down "family traditions" to continue.
They, we, geniusly trust ourselves, our intuition.
We are reclaiming. We are reimagining. We are recreating. Africana Women's Studies, YOU should be here.

Are you attending any conferences this summer?
Today I'm at the Women in Science and Engineering conference
I've been invited as I'm one of their 'role models' for the 'My Skills, My Life' resource that WISE have created for highschool students!
I'll be posting about it more in my stories but my main aim today is to network with 1 person if I can and not get too sensory overloaded. This is the first time I've disclosed my autism to conference organisers and they've said they can find a quiet room if I get close to a meltdown which is great I really hope more conferences in the future think more about accessibility, including those of us with invisible disabilities.
As a researcher we're expected to attend conferences to disseminate our research, exchange ideas and facilitate collaborations. This is almost a 'test run' conference for me as in July I'll be heading to Sheffield for the UK semiconductors conference where I'm presenting a poster on my work
Have you got any conference tips? Feel free to leave them in the comments!
You asked for it! // What a PhD student (actually) eats in a day ⠀

DISCLAIMER: I am not promoting this type of eating behaviour. This photo only shows a glimpse into some PhD students reality, at some moments of time. These photos are meant for discussion and a reminder that you are not alone. The corresponding blog post also shares some tips on how healthy, affordable eating is possible as a phd student. I promote eating healthy and listening to your body to make you feel good. Do what works and is best for you.⠀
Since it's exam season so it's dawned on me that I never have to take a written exam again!
It's been almost a year since I took the last exam of my 4 year MPhys degree and graduated last July. I'm still in shock that I did it and without appropriate adjustments until my very last semester
In retrospect I spent most of my exams having a sensory overload and subsequent panic attack which seriously affected my marks. Luckily I'm great at coursework, especially experimental labs and reports so that raised my overall marks up.
Since written exams were worth 70% of each module of my degree I spent a lot of time worried I wouldn't pass. There was a massive difference in my written exam marks once I was in a smaller room with sensory considerations. So if you suffer from panic attacks or similar in exams I highly recommend speaking to your disability services to see if you need reasonable adjustments!
As a PhD student in the UK I have a review assessment every 6 months. In October I will have my confirmation which consists of a ~40 page report on my work so far and plans for my project as well as a viva (an oral exam). Then right at the end of my PhD I'll hand in my thesis to be read and have my final viva voce which is a long oral exam with expert academics in my field discussing my thesis and probably picking it apart While this prospect is rather terrifying I will be assessed on the work that I have been doing for 4 years and get the opportunity to talk about physics with experts which is quite exciting
So good luck to all of those students studying hard and taking your exams You can totally do this!!
What exams or assessments have you got coming up? Let me know so I can wish you luck
