While coming up with an idea for my graduation cap decor, I kept returning to the following statement, "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have a lot of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people." Well, I can assure you that I didn’t bring any drugs; actually I do deal with drugs, but those drugs are the ones prescribed for my patients by healthcare providers. I didn’t bring crime; my criminal record is clean or otherwise, I couldn’t practice in my career. I can definitely assure you that I am not a rapist. I am none of those things that were said about my people. However, I can tell you more of who I am in reality. I am an educated Mexicana. I am also undocumented but contribute to this country in multiple ways. I pay taxes, volunteer in my community and most importantly I have worked as a nurse for the last four years. As a nurse, I have cared for hundreds of Americans. I have provided CPR to tens if not more patients never thinking about where they are from but worrying about bringing them back to life. So when my people get called out for being “bad hombres” or “bad people” I am going to object. There are so many of us hardworking individuals that “Mexico sent” and we are our here trying our hardest to be accepted to the only country we know. It is exhausting to constantly defend the reasons why we don’t go back to our countries; because borders separated our families;because our parents wanted better opportunities for us; because we had no choice as young children. So yes Mexico might have sent me, but this is the country I now know and I am here to succeed and prove we aren’t all bad people.
