In the late 1920s in Australia, due to a surplus of wheat the emu population began to rapidly increase. By 1932 there were over 20,000 birds, a mob that ravaged towns and homesteads. 86 years ago today, he government responded by dispatching a small group of soldiers, however even with machine guns they were ineffective. The guns constantly jammed and the emus could easily run out of range. After weeks of conflict, it was considered emu victory. In 1932 the Australian government fought a war against emus... and lost. The Emu War (or Great Emu War) refers to an unsuccessful, month-long Australian government plan to try and curb the population of the long-legged flightless bird in Western Australia by employing soldiers with guns to hunt them. In 1932, as farmers in Western Australia during the Great Depression prepared their annual crops, as many as 20,000 emus began to inhabit farm territory. The government responded by sending World War I veterans and truck-mounted machine guns to massacre the emus. However, killing the emus was more difficult than the soldiers anticipated - the emus would scatter in different directions at the sound of gunfire and were much faster and more elusive than expected. Противники: страусы эму VS вооружённые силы Австралии(министр обороны сэр Джордж Пирс, майор Мередит, двое солдат, пулемёты Льюиса). Итог: австралийцы проиграли. Причиной войны стали жалобы фермеров на массовые набеги птиц, уничтожающих посевы. Свежерасчищенные(в период Великой депрессии фермерам обещались субсидии за увеличение площади посевов)угодья привлекли огромное количество страусов - несколько десятков тысяч. 2 ноября солдаты прибыли в Кэмпион, местные фермеры попытались завлечь стаю эму в засаду, но птицы разделились на мелкие группы и убежали (зигзагами). Позднее была обнаружена небольшая группировка эму. Всего за день были убиты пара десятков птиц. Следующей важной датой войны было 4 ноября. Хитрый Мередит устроил засаду возле дамбы - более 1000 эму были замечены в этом направлении. Артиллеристы дождались, пока птицы подойдут близко. Но...пулемёт внезапно сломался после убийства всего дюжины страусов, а остальные скрылись. Бравого майора посетила блестящая идея - он установил пулемёт на грузовик, но план оказался так себе: эму бегали быстрее, а грузовик так трясло, что стрелок не мог сделать ни единого выстрела. 8 ноября войска были отозваны. Операция объявлена проваленной. Отчёт Мередита сообщал, что его люди не понесли потерь. Но опытный майор был вновь отправлен сражаться с врагом 13 ноября и сражался почти месяц. Упавшие духом солдаты отступили 10 декабря - командование эму перешло на партизанские методы ведения борьбы. Большая страусиная армия распалось на множество отдельных единиц и пулеметы стали бесполезны. Всего за войну по утверждению майора было совершено 986 убийств с 9860 ‍♀️ очередями выстрелов.
