Irish summer "Myself and kids visited Fanad Lighthouse the week before last. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience a working lighthouse. We were fascinated to hear about the history of the lighthouse especially about the people who lived and worked there. We climbed the spiral staircase to the top to see the view and look through binoculars. Aisling, our guide was able to answer all our questions and spoke fluent Irish to myself and my children which was a lovely surprise. St John's Point lighthouse unique yellow and black stripes were painted on it in the early 1950s. It is the only lighthouse in Ireland to have these sequence of colours. The colour a lighthouse is painted is called its day mark and helps sea traffic identify it. The distinctive black and yellow were used as an experiment as they thought it might be easier to spot in fog. The Irish playwright Brendan Behan was engaged in painting the lighthouse around this time. His father had a painting buisness that won a contract to paint a number of Irish lighthouses. There is a letter of complaint in existence written by the lighthouse keeper to his boss complaining about Behan and his work at St John's Point. I was was telling my Mother this bit of history last night and she casually dropped the fact that Behan also worked for her father . He (my grandfather) was also a painter and seemingly didn't think too much about Behan either. That's what I love about telling stories and sharing history. Someone will always come back with a little bit more than you brought and add colour to the story.
