It's amazing the secrets that vintage clothing can hold. Sometimes you find old coins in purses, shopping lists in pockets, notes, photos or religious charms. Sometimes you know the name of the previous owner and the next thing you know, you're doing their family tree on ancestry! I like finding old repairs on items, then you realize the garment was much loved, or much needed. Today I was going over a Victorian cape to list. Inside was a black cotton lining with a small hole and a repair. Through the small hole, I could see blue and white fabric was under the black lining. Hmm, unusual. So I pulled at the repair and looked inside, I could see white stars on blue fabric! Then I got out my seam ripper and opened the lining in about a 5 inch area along the bottom and looked inside. Not only were there stars on blue, there were red and white stripes! I pulled it out more and suddenly there was a face!!!! I ended up with the entire cape and black lining turned inside out to reveal that the velvet had been backed with 2 cut up Grover Cleveland presidential campaign flags from about 1884!!
