Did you #GuessTheArtist correctly? Here’s the full view of Vincent van Gogh's "Roadway with Underpass (Le viaduct)" (Asnières, 1887)
__
“I am getting well acquainted with nature. I exaggerate, sometimes I make changes in a motif; but for all that, I do not invent the whole picture; on the contrary, I find it all ready in nature, only it must be disentangled.”—Vincent van Gogh. While living in Paris, Van Gogh made frequent excursions to the suburb of Asnières to escape the urban environment and paint in nature before his subject, a method he often advocated to other artists. For this painting, Van Gogh chose the vantage point of a traveler en route from Asnières, which is suggested by a dim glow at the end of the tunnel. The figure dressed in black walking into the darkness midway in the tunnel lends a vague air of forewarning. Severin Roesen
‘Still Life, Flowers, and Fruit’
Oil on Canvas

In this lush and fanciful image, Severin Roesen has arranged irises, tulips, cabbage roses, bluebells, and dahlias alongside an apple, an orange, half of a lemon, grapes, a pear, a peach, Italian plums, and a tiny stem of red currants. All appear at their height of bloom or ripeness, though this would have been impossible in nature (and they would have decayed before the artist could complete his composition). Given this element of fantasy, and because several motifs repeat throughout Roesen's hundreds of still lifes, scholars speculate that he may have employed some form of stencil or pattern.
